SOC 112 Module Four Worksheet: Wealth Inequality in America Started watching the video on wealth inequality in America, I initially assumed that the equality system was really close to the second example where the distribution is relative to what Americans think. However, after watching it to the end, I was horrified by how much the system is stratified diving people into the rich and poor. Research by Michael and Dan (2010) shows that there are three graphs of equality two of which do not even closely resemble reality. It is hard to say that I was surprised by this information. On the one hand, it was expected that the possibility of a significant preponderance of wealth was not ruled out. On the other hand, I was amazed that America succumbed to such a global preponderance. According to Emmanuel (2010), the poorest class, the so-called bottom, represents as much as 90% of the population and their income is $29,840, while the wealthy class, which is 0.1%, on average receives $2,802,020. I consider this difference to be incredibly large. If we consider the issue of the influence of social status on success globally, I can certainly say that the financial threshold affects about 80% of one’s success. For example, let’s look at an ordinary person who wants to succeed by making a video on YouTube. Let’s assume he wants to develop a cooking channel. In order to start filming, he needs a good camera that will give the viewer a high-quality picture, a good microphone for recording voiceover, and, of course, decent kitchen appliances not to be ashamed to display them for other people. Thus, funds are needed to buy basic equipment. Also, the future blogger should name a good computer for processing and editing video and sound. An average CEO pay is 185 times bigger than that of a regular worker (Economic Policy Institute, 2010). Based on these statistics, we can understand that the inequality in America is impressive.
