Seeds Project Individual Assignment 1
Instructions (see example source on page two):
Identify a health problem you think exists for Kent State Students (can be online students, on-campus students, students at a specific campus or for the whole university system).
Consider the numbers you would use to explain to a grant funding provider that this problem needs a solution. For instance, if the problem you want to address only affects a handful of students, it may not get funded. If a large percentage of students are affected in a meaningful way, this makes the issue more pressing and more likely to get funding.
Find two different sources of information on that problem. One source should be the ACHA NCHA survey, and the other one should be from recent, scholarly, peer-reviewed articles on college students/young adults in the US.For instance, if you were doing a project on HIV awareness, you would find statistics on how many people in the US are currently infected, how many people do not know their HIV status or how many new infections occur each year. ?
Example Source:
1. What is the title of the source?
Epidemiology and Impact of Health Care Provider-Diagnosed Anxiety and Depression Among US Children
2. Where was the source published?
The Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics
3. What is the publication date of the source?
June 2018
4. What is the problem (health issue, behavior, etc.) that relates to this study?
It is about youth mental health, specifically anxiety and depression. Bitsko and colleagues (2018) analyzed results from the same national survey (The National Survey of Children’s Health or NSCH) at three different time points to reveal the prevalence of diagnosed youth mental illnesses in children in the US.
5. Who was studied?
a. How many people were studied?
The researchers analyzed data from 2003, 2007 and the 2011-2012 survey year. The researchers limited the number of responses for this research, so they analyzed data from 68,786 children in 2003, 63,874 in 2007 and 65,41 in 2011-2012 (Bitsko et al., 2018).
b. How do you describe the demographics of those studied?
The NSCH collects data from parents who have children under 18. The researchers of this article only used data from parents who had a child between the ages of 6 and 17.
6. What were the methods used to collect data?
The NSCH is a cross-sectional random digit dial telephone survey of parents and guardians (Bitsko et al., 2018, p. 3), meaning researchers from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) randomly call people throughout the US to ask them questions about their childs or childrens health.
7. How did the researchers analyze data?
The researchers used regression analyses to see if anxiety and depression diagnoses changed over time.
8. What were some of the key results (quantify these using numbers)?
The key result from this study is that anxiety and depression are increasing in US children. The authors found that children who had been diagnosed with either of these conditions increased from 2003 (5.4%) to 2007 (7.8) and again in 2011-2012 (8.4%) (Bitsko et al., 2018).
9. What are some limitations of this research?
First, the data comes from parents who are telling interviewers what they heard from a medical provider, so there are two places for data to be distorted, as parents may misunderstand providers, or parents may incorrectly report to researchers what they heard. Another issue is that children who not been taken to a doctor for a depression or anxiety diagnosis might still have these issues, so families without healthcare providers may have been excluded from these numbers.
10. How is this research applicable to Kent State University students?
It is not! The data here relates to people under 17, so it does not apply to our population (making it a great example). Look for a similar demographic group in your own sources (people in the US, college students, people over 18, etc.).Source 1:
