Black Lives Matter Movement The movement of my choice is the Black Lives Matter (BLM) that aimed to mobilize and organize policing premised on racial inequality. The focus group is the African American and the way police treat and classify them. In recent times, the movement has expanded its focus to also deal with the rights of the transgender, disabled, and undocumented individuals (Williamson,Trump,& Einstein, 2018). I learnt about the social movement online through the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter. After George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the case involving murder of Trayvon Martin, the movement grew in popularity across social media platforms, but in terms of its influence on policy makers, much is yet to be done. The BLM movement highlights the historical injustices that the African Americans underwent and are still facing in the US. The group ensures that the systematic killings of the blacks are eliminated. The shootings of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Eric Garner, and Akai Gurley have led to the movement gaining popularity across the country (Williamson et al., 2018). The shooting of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old African American boy, further fueled the movement as it gained support from different races. However, the BLM has a long way to go in terms of significant public interest or mainstream media coverage. The patterns and trends in the movement have been documented but correlation between deaths of Black people versus coverage is still lacking. The constant attacks on the lives of the people of color are the core for the BLM. The movement has made more African Americans aware of their rights. If individuals face the challenges, they often take videos that depict the atrocities committed upon them by the police. The movement has advanced further through documentaries, such asBars4justice, created to reflect on the prejudices inflicted on the African-American population. The hashtags developed on social media supporting the movement have also led to the realization that most of the younger generation is well aware of this vice. Although the movement has been successful, it has faced several barriers. Police sympathizers have started their own movement under the hashtag BlueLivesMatter (Williamson et al., 2018). Antagonists have also come up with the #AllLivesMatter thus watering down the wave that #BlackLivesMatter. With relation to impact on my life, the movement sheds light on the plight of the minorities in the US and the role society should play in fight for equality. Additionally, the BLM shows that eachhas a voice to should speak to be heard. The transformations in the system due to the BLM demonstrations have made me realize that the general public can bring change. Reference Williamson, V., Trump, K., & Einstein, K. L. (2018). Facebook has become a part of the daily life of world community, creating significant shift not only in the activities of a group but also in the perception of the world. Social medias have significant effect on the humanity, as the post or advertisement or even a photo may became viral, making the one to be global and changing the people’s perception of event specificity. Consequently, Facebook supports the academic research on the identification of the role social media plays in the specific social events, including elections and democracy. Academic researchers now could use the posts, its information, “likes”, comments, hating content, spam, shares, and false news in order to identify the impact of the specific event or information on the development of the real-world changes. Such possibility offers unique content for the research, demonstrating how people and their opinion can be affected by the specific groups of people who can “direct” the development of an event in one or another way. Therefore, the researchers are able to identify how the Facebook content affect people and their decisions, shifts the events’ outcomes, and overall development of national and world community. Facebook, as overall social media, has significant effect on the formation of people’s understanding of the trends, events, notions, and even life’s priorities through the manipulation of one’s opinions, values, and desires. The content in social media became the most powerful tool to affect the decisions of millions, and academic researchers are now able to identify how Facebook shapes modern world. Through the publication of fake news or real ones within the manipulative context or with fake or overactive facts, information on Facebook can create a world panic regarding the virus, criminals, and any other issue through which one wants to change public opinion. As a result, the world community is trapped between the truthful and false information in order to make right decision. Therefore, through the Facebook research, social science can identify the main characteristics of an event and research the way it affected world community and one’s opinions and decisions in the particular situation. Evolution of Social Science Inquiry As society develops, new social phenomena emerge and play a significant role in socio-economic, cultural, and political relations. Therefore, in order to remain relevant and give correct answers to the questions about new social trends, dynamics, and processes, social science inquiry has to advance and evolve together with contemporary social processes. For example, social science should investigate issues pertaining to social media, new models of shared economy (Uber, online crowd funding, etc.), online communications, marketing, advertising, the influence of external stimuli on different aspects of human behaviors, etc. Therefore, social science moves forward by conducting research and generating new knowledge necessary to address the issues of interest to scientists and professionals from different fields of knowledge. It is important to continue developing and expanding understanding of social science concepts for several reasons. First, as cultural values shift and change, social science needs to develop new models and concepts to frame and explain new socio-cultural dynamics and prevent social science from becoming obsolete. In other words, since concepts and models of yesterday may have little power and relevance to explain social processes of today, social science should develop to remain relevant. Second, social science concepts should evolve together with social changes to provide valid and updated knowledge about society. In my observational journal, I posed a question about the use of social values andcultural stereotypes by professional marketers to manipulate consumers’ behaviors, feelings, and perceived needs for things and promote products as a means of satisfying needs and enhancing desired behaviors and feelings. I believe that additional research may reveal how marketers use stereotypes and values that people learn at work, from family members and social media, or from cultural and religious influences to promote irrational buying behaviors and excessive consumption. In this regard, an interesting issue that may be worth following up on is investigating a specific example of a commercial from a known company that uses fear or social pressure as a means of promoting buying behaviors. SCS 100 Project 3: Final Reflection Guidelines and Rubric Overview Your third longer-term assignment in this course is a presentation or short paper in which you will share your question derived at the end of your observation journal in learning block 4-3 and discuss why it is important and how developments in the social sciences contribute to our understanding of ourselves, each other, and the world around us. This final reflection will assess the following course outcomes, which you focused on throughout Theme 4:
Prompt Your third project is a presentation or short paper (you are free to choose) that explores the question you posed at the end of your observation journal. With that question as your topic, you will explain why the answer to it is important to understanding yourself, other people, and the world around you and how the social sciences have developed to help us answer these important questions. The critical elements of this assessment will be evaluated by the information in your presentation or paper. Be sure your actual question is apparent on the presentation or paper. Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed in your submission:
IV. Detail the major developments in social science thinking that drive questions regarding studying others. Use course resources to back up your discussion.
VI. Detail the major developments in social science thinking that support the study and advancement of the social sciences as necessary and valuable. Use course resources to back up your discussion. Supporting Work and Resources Throughout Theme 4, there are supports you will use as you work directly on different elements of the final reflection.
incorporate any feedback from your instructor on this question into your final reflection.
View this submission and the feedback for this assignment via the My Grades section of the course and incorporate this assignment into your final reflection.
Rubric Guidelines for Submission: Your actual question must be apparent on the presentation or in the short paper. If you choose to write a short paper, it should be double spaced and 1–2 pages in length. Note for students choosing the presentation option: If using Prezi, be sure to include a Word document with notes. If using PowerPoint, be sure to include speaker notes.
Observation Journal Article choice. I have chosen the advertisements to investigate influence of different factors on human relations. All of them in some or other way depict human interaction under particular circumstances: violence, age, alcohol or culture differences. All of these advertisements are touching the topic of manipulation. It may be manipulation on standards of beauty and pressure to stay beautiful at every age, manipulation on change of conscience by the means of alcohol or food, or manipulation in a harder form – violence. Assumptions and observations. Audience: as advertisements belong to the different target goals, thus audience can be very diverse. However, all of them are made for adults. First ad promotes struggle against home violence and mostly is directed to women who suffer from that. A sports sponsor expands audience to men and sports enthusiasts. Diadermine contributes efforts to attract women as customers, as only she stays the same on the photo while her husband looks older and older. V20 and Pizza Planet cover both women and men with purchasing power and cultural and race differences. Message: there is no one common straightforward message for all advertisements, as all of them depict very different areas of life. Generally they depict howdifferent social and cultural forces influence human behavior and thoughts. We are influenced by examples from family, social media, work, religion, cultural community, stereotypes etc. One of the most powerful triggers is also evident in all the ads- fear of acceptance. First ad shows fear obviously, fear of existent violence, second ad manipulates with fear to lose beauty and youth, two other ads use fear of being unaccepted by other trying to show their product as a “remedy” from this fear. All of ads message to the customer about relations between you and your “self”, and impact of these relations to external communication with the world and other people. Relations between people. There is an eternal evidence of mutual influence and dependence on opinions or actions of others. It may be negative as in the first ad, where is a call to action to stop and do not tolerate violence. At the same time there is a person who is strong enough to help and defend the victim. In a some way the ad underlines weakness of women comparing to man in this society, emphasizing existing differences in a female and male society roles. Diadermine in its turn, reflects obsession on women beauty standards and prejudices that beauty and youth bring happiness and solve all the problems in relations with men. Two other ads use products (alcohol or food) to determine their influences on people’s relations as a vital part of communication process. Relationship with product: as first ad is a social one, there is no product involved. While all others are based on consumerism, and adding pleasures to life in form of eternal youth, flavors of food and easiness after alcohol. All of them symbolize people’s need to doping themselves externally to feel good inside. Effectiveness The most powerful is a social ad as it cries for justice, for help to defenseless women, children who suffer from home violence. It hits humanistic reflexes of mercy and kindness. Regarding other ads, V20 is the less persuasive because personally I do not belong to their target audience. I believe mostly teenagers or people with less confidence may take into account alcohol as a way to overcome personal barriers in communication with other sex. Ads of antiaging cream and pizza with different tastes in one are attractive, as am vegetarian I can share the same product with a big company of friendsand look young and beautiful at my age. Social science evidence. As was discussed earlier in paper and on our studies, topic of social construction is very useful for marketing business. Society creates particular standards of how women should look at certain age (advertisement 2), how to behave and be popular(ad 3), how to stereotype cultures (ad 4). The more we hear, see or experience something, the stronger our confirmation bios becomes. If we constantly will be surrounded by people with certain appearance, familiar with only specific tastes, look at particular behavioural models, we would accept it as an only option of reality. We would like to acquire products that would help us to look this way, behave this way or eat this food.Additionally a herd reflex works in human behaviour that make people be very narrowed in a vision of possibilities, options and consequences. Question: as a social scientist, I am interested in many aspects of human nature and psychology. That is reason why chosen ads are so diverse and may not be devoted to one straightforward topic. According to my ads, there plenty of questions to consider. How do products figure cultural stereotypes to consumers? What is the influence of social call to action to people’s gender and society stereotypes? What associations people do input for flavors and alcohol and how it impacts their behavior? All of them in one or another way touch studying of human relations and how different factors may influence them. |
