Guidelines for preparing your manuscript:
DO NOT USE THE INTERNET for your primary sources of information except for statistical data. You may certainly find general information on the internet, but you are expected to go to the library and find the scientific information. Use the UWS library or even better, take a trip over the bridge and us the health science library at CSS. You are preparing a formal research paper, not a high school term paper. Resources such as Google and Wikipedia are fine if you are researching trivia. To do the job correctly one must spend some time searching for information, beyond a keyboard.
Acceptable sources of statistical information:
Centers For Disease Control [CDC] (Links to an external site.)
World Health Organization [WHO] (Links to an external site.)
American Lung Association (Links to an external site.)
American Heart Association (Links to an external site.)
American Cancer Society (Links to an external site.)
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America (Links to an external site.)
Do not use these websites for the pathophysiology of a disease or condition. Again go to the textbooks and review the detailed information from them. If you do not understand something, use a medical dictionary and other resources to learn what you do not understand or know.
Examples of reliable sources for disease information:
The Merck Manual
Biology textbooks
Pathophysiology and Human Disease Textbooks
Physiology Books
Textbook Of Medical Physiology [Guyton]
Be sure that you use a current edition when reviewing information in textbooks. One which has a 2000 copyright is quite dated. Regarding literature [journal articles] the rule of thumb is 5 years and older are out of date.
You should have a minimum of FIVE [5] references.
The purpose of this assignment is twofold. One so you learn how to obtain credible and correct information about disease and disability from the correct sources and synthesize that information in an understandable form. This leads to the second purpose. Express your thoughts in a professional non-personal manner. Within the paper please do not attempt to personalize it with discussion and stories about friends and family who have suffered from a condition or who have died from it. This assignment needs to remain on the professional and scientific aspect of disease.
Writing style. You are to use American Psychological Association [APA] writing style within your paper. Manuals are available at most bookstores[such as Barnes and Noble] and the library. If you are unfamiliar with APA or do not understand it, get the manual and follow directions.
HERE are some of my pet peeves when I read and evaluate papers. I suggest you take these to heart. If you fail to follow directions and submit a subpar document, you will fail the assignment and most likely the course.:
Do not use contractions.
Do write your paper in third person. [not first {{I}} and not second {{you}}].
Do proof read your document [proofreading does not mean spell check only]
Do cite all facts written.
Do NOT submit your paper without citations
Do not plagiarize [copying text from another source and putting “quotation marks” on it does not qualify for your own work].
Do number your pages.
Do not, put: commas; and other: punctuation, where, they; do: not, belong: it gets, fragmented;
