Describe the specific theories, assumptions, or “schools of thought” that the characters in the film have. How do their schools of thought differ?
The movie “Gran Torino” revolved around the ageist assumptions. Many people would also view this movie as having a theme of racism due to Walt, Clint Eastwood, making slur remarks regarding the Asian neighbors. I can recall Walt walking outside and seeing the neighbor and he mentioned why did they choose this neighborhood. In my opinion, the school of thought that was displayed is the feedback loop.
The reason why I choose the feedback loop because its analysis between reflection and actions. The reflection that Walt was having is the time that he was in the Korean War and having the thought of someone killing him in public.
The action that was taken was for the gang members to kill him in public so everyone who was watching will be able to see that he was innocent, unarmed and the gang members would have to pay their time by serving their prison sentence. This will remove the gang members from the community and the community will be back to normal.
How do the main characters change over the course of a film? How do their goals or desires change? Do they see themselves differently by the end of the film?
The main characters do change over the course of the film. The neighbors realize that Walt is a person who stays to himself and he will defend anyone who comes in his yard. The goals and desires change by showing that Walt will protect when necessary. The scene that proves is when Thao was getting abused and harassed and Walt had to step in by physically beating the gang members and holding them down at gunpoint.
Yet, the gang member retaliated but that only made Walt furious. By the end of the movie, they do see themselves different because the old retired veteran was not mean after all, he was only protecting his community. That was to get rid of the gang members and he would do any and everything to get rid of the gang members.
Which reflective theory from the course best illustrates the process the main characters go through during the film? How so?
The reflective theory that displayed Korthagen and Vasalos. This movie started off with the providing the necessary actions to show Walt personality and his isolation that he felt from his own children. Next the movie informs the audience of how Walt was once in the military and his reflections of the military and the time he served.
Lastly, Walt put the actions to the gang members by trying to keep them away from the community by first warning them to stay away and next by coming to their side of town, which led to his death. Would you say that the main characters evolved or grew after learning something that was new, or a new approach, a new theory, or a new understanding of their place in the world?
In my opinion, I would say the characters changed after learning about the gang members in the community. By the gang members being in the same community, that put everyone around in defense mode. Also, the movie shows the suspense after Thao was attacked on his way home and the drive- by that left the home damaged.
By all that happening, Walt had to make something happen and get them off the streets. In my opinion, I think Walt had it planned out on how he was going to get them removed from the streets. Sadly, it took retired veteran to get the gang members off the street.
