Worksheet
This Worksheet will assist you in better understanding the three sociological perspectives and social institutions, as well as organizing your thoughts in preparation for writing your Final Essay, which is due in Week 6. Keep in mind that you will be transferring and expanding on this information in your Week 6 Final Essay assignment as you complete each section.
Compare and contrast each of the three major sociological perspectives discussed in Unit 1 of the Interactive Units (functionalism, conflict, and symbolic interactionism). Make a point to discuss the similarities and differences between the three points of view.
Consider what matches in the perspectives, or theories, when looking for similarities. What are the similarities and differences between these items? You’ll be able to review your notes and look for paired concepts if you took notes while reading.
Choose one social institution to analyze (education, family, or government, as discussed in Unit 1 of the Interactive Units). Identify and discuss a social issue or problem that the social institution is dealing with. Note: Choose a social institution that you’d like to learn more about and reflect on. For example, if you’re a parent dealing with the difficulties of raising a teen, you could write about the family as a social institution.
Write three short paragraphs (2-3 sentences each) describing your chosen social institution from the perspectives of functionalism, conflict, and symbolic interactionism, one for each sociological perspective. To support your statements, use at least one specific example from the Interactive Units or Required Resources in each paragraph. To put it another way, back up your claims with evidence from the Interactive Unit, the Resources, or something you’ve read, heard, seen, or experienced. Make sure to credit your sources. “According to the Stanford Social Institutions website…”, “According to a January 5, 2015 article in the New York Times…”, and “According to Unit 1 in the Interactive Units…” are all acceptable citations.

Make a rough outline of an introduction and conclusion for your Final Essay. In each, state your thesis statement clearly and back it up with three main points. The introduction and conclusion should be similar but use different words. In other words, the conclusion should not be a recitation of the introduction or thesis word for word.
