My name is ___________, I’ve been a nurse since 2011, always working in a hospital setting. My goals are to finish the FNP program, open my own clinic and able to manage my own time. Applying preventive medicine, one of the more important milestones in the patient quality of life and wellbeing.
Why did nurses decide to pursue an Advanced Practice major? What is the role of the advanced practice nurse?
Higher education in nursing practice is required due to the fact that the profession itself is getting increasingly complex. A master’s degree in nursing allows an advanced practice nurse (APN) to take such positions as clinical nurse leaders, managers, educators, or administrators (DeNisco, 2019). Moreover, their advanced knowledge enables APNs to serve as clinical nurse specialists, and provide care to patients with complex cases, including surgical, oncology, pediatric, and critical care (DeNisco, 2019). Therefore, nurses pursue higher education degrees to provide better care for their patients. DeNisco (2019) states that “Opportunities for nurses to coordinate care throughout the continuum of care are likely to abound” (p. 16). Their role is to provide high-quality care and coordinate medical personnel. APNs are required to be able to recognize and make necessary changes in the nursing process of each patient and serve as a link between nurses and doctors.
What is the evidence suggesting regarding the role of Family Nurse Practitioners in primary care? What do you think Family Nurse Practitioners could do differently to improve patient outcomes? Is EBP the answer? Give specific examples.
Family nurse practitioners (FNPs) are allowed to provide many services that were previously covered by physicians only, lowering the strain on the healthcare system. The input of a family nurse practitioner in primary care can give significant insight into any underlying factors. In my opinion, a good family nurse practitioner serves not only as a health care provider but as a family friend. This approach allows a better understanding of patients’ values, past, present, and future health issues, as well as opens them up for a dialogue on their health issues and negative habits. Therefore, additional training in social skills should be emphasized during FNP’s education.
FNP is expected to take necessary actions based on the evidence, evaluating the needs of a patient (DeNisco, 2019). For example, if FNP discovers an abnormality in a patient’s status during prenatal care, he/she should be able to assess the need to transfer a patient to the nearest hospital based on the symptoms. FNP should take the patient’s values and preferences into consideration, as well as any underlying issues that could suggest the severity of the problem.
What do you think are the Skills & Personality Traits to be a Successful Nurse Practitioner?
I think it is crucial to take patients’ values into the perspective to ensure their satisfaction. A nurse practitioner obtains several vital social skills during his/her education, which aim to understand a patient: their personality, needs, and beliefs. Ghahramanian et al. (2020) argue that “to provide good care, communication is an important factor” (p. 24). The inclusion of the patient and their family in clinical decisions, mutual trust, and friendly relationships contribute to a positive outcome (Ghahramanian et al., 2020). These skills should be continuously kept in check by supportive education and staff examinations, for example, through questionnaires. Regarding personality traits, I believe that a nurse should be able to multitask in order to keep both patient’s health and emotional status in check. Moreover, a successful nurse practitioner must have such traits as sensitivity and persuasiveness to be able to communicate with patients and medical staff effectively.
