In keeping with the University requirement that we continue courses through on-line instruction, I have prepared the final activity for our class. On the syllabus, I specified the text that we would be using to discuss rhetoric and the African American experience. The text, entitled Liberating Language: Sites of Rhetorical Education in Nineteenth-Century Black America, is attached to this email in chapters so that they can be downloaded individually. The text is a total of 134 pages, and is certainly reader friendly. It is highly interesting in content, very informative, and you should enjoy reading the material presented there.

Instructions

Your responsibility for this activity is to read the text, and to write up responses to the itemized questions below. For ease of reading and responding, the questions are presented in the order that corresponds to the material as discussed in the text.

Your papers should be between 6-10 pages, double spaced, and sent to me by Wednesday, April 22. Please avoid sending papers in late.

As needed, I am available for clarification or consultation. This activity has been designed as a learning experience that connects rhetoric, as discussed in class, to the African American experience.

Questions

Discuss what is understood by the phrase “rhetorical education” for 19^th century Black America. Although the expression is introduced early in the text on page 3, it is expanded upon throughout the text. Be sure to include in your discussion both (a) a definition of rhetorical education, and (2) its perceived contribution to alleviating the Black condition.

Since most Black Americans were not privileged to attend schools, colleges, or universities during the first half of the 19^th century, discuss briefly the varied and various sites, settings, opportunities that they created to provide access to and development of rhetorical education/competence. This material is introduced in Chapter 2, but discussed throughout.

Select one male and one female during the 19^th century, and discuss their respective journey toward rhetorical education. Also, what significant contribution did each make in the struggle for Black liberation?

Discuss the role of the Black press toward rhetorical education during the period under study.

The answer is complete. 50 points: The essay illustrates exemplary understanding of the relevant material by thoroughly and correctly addressing the relevant content; identifying and explaining all of the key concepts/ideas; using correct terminology explaining the reasoning behind key points/claims and substantiating, as necessary/useful, points with several accurate and illuminating examples. No aspects of the required answer are missing.

Use of Sources (worth a maximum of 20% of the total points). Zero points: Student failed to include citations and/or references. Or the student failed to submit a final paper. 5 out 20 points: Sources are seldom cited to support statements and/or format of citations are not recognizable as APA 6^th Edition format. There are major errors in the formation of the references and citations. And/or there is a major reliance on highly questionable. The Student fails to provide an adequate synthesis of research collected for the paper. 10 out 20 points: References to scholarly sources are occasionally given; many statements seem unsubstantiated.
