Report on Current Business Strategies
Each student will present a current business strategies report to the class in order to bring current examples of strategic issues and problems into the classroom. The report must be based on material from the business press and must cover a topic that occurred within the last 12 months. The article(s) should focus on the strategic issues confronting a specific firm or industry and should be directly related to the course’s topics.
The following points should be included in your oral report:
1. A quick rundown of the story’s main points.
2. Identify and explain the key course concepts, tools, and topics to which this report pertains.
3. Your analysis/evaluation of the effectiveness of this company’s strategy and actions in relation to the topic.
You will submit a one-page (maximum) typed summary of your report. Make sure to include the article’s URL as well as any other materials used to create the report. If you are called upon to do so in class, you should be prepared to present, not read, a 2-3 minute summary of your report.
A current event news article on which you can base your report is Intel’s decision to fire its CEO.(http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/20/technology/20chip.html)
You can use this example to examine Intel’s specific competitive pressures and managerial challenges. In Session 1, we learn about a firm’s external environment. You can conduct an Intel industry analysis using the tools (General Environment Analysis, Five Forces Analysis) (or more specifically the microprocessor industry). What are the industry forces that influence whether or not the decision is a good one? What factors from the broader environment (political, sociocultural, economic, etc.) influence this decision?
As a strategy consultant, you’ll weigh the advantages and disadvantages of a decision, choose which tool to use, and explain why it’s important.
