Re: Topic 3 DQ 1
Using your textbook and data and websites from Week 1, take two American Protestant denomination groups mentioned in the textbook. Highlight a new fact that you surfaced. When you respond to your classmates’ DQ, highlight a new fact that they surfaced.
Christians make up 80% of the United States Population, while the majority of those identify as Protestants (Hemeyer, p. 41). With that being said, I was totally unaware that the Baptist faith was “unpopular and illegal in England, and those who held them faced threats of punishment and death, leading those who could to lee” (Hemeyer, p. 53). This revelation is a testament to how far we have come, being that Baptist is now the most widely practiced Protestant faith at 20%.
As a young child I was raised Baptist, however I attended a private Lutheran Elementary School. I never knew that “Lutherans teach that both the law and the gospel are necessary. The law is necessary to awaken sinners to their sinful condition and to arouse them to repentance and a longing for redemption” (Hemeyer, p. 58). Last week we spoke a bit about the separation of church and state (government, police, politics etc.) and when I attended Chapel each week the foundation of our lessons were rooted in the word of God, and there was never any mention of the word of the law. I was intrigued that our text highlighted the laws that govern us as a priority in the Lutheran church.

Re: Topic 3 DQ 2
Choose four distinct aspects of Protestant faith and practice. Which of these aspects do you see as more common and/or rarer? Cite examples.
The four aspects of protestant faith and practice that I chose to highlight are:
- Baptisms are a widely regarded practice in many Protestants faith denominations and is common in many other religions as well.
- Communion is something that, as I Baptist, I partake in the 1st Sunday of Each month; while many in the Catholic church partake in communion twice a day or once each week. Communion is a very common practice from faith to faith, although they may practice communion (The Last Supper) differently.
- The Quacker (The Friends) are distinctive from other Protestant faiths in that “They do not regard theBible as the final, complete revelation of God” Hemeyer, p. 64), which is extremely rare because there are some Protestant faiths that regard the bible as the actual word of God and a word that we should all be governed by.
- The text notes something that stands out about the Protestant faith is“The importance of preaching” (Hemeyer, p. 49). As a child I noticed that when I visited the Kingdom Hall with a middle school friend, who was a Jehovah’s Witness, their leader did not “preach”. Attending her lesson was like attending a day at school. Very call, they read from their book as if it were a textbook in class. It was calm, there was no praise and worship team or an abundance of music, of real sense of hierarchy in the way that the message was delivered. As I began to visit several different places of worship, I began to regard preaching as unique to my faith. Some teach, some mediate, some witness door to door. I was never aware that our reverence for preaching in the pulpit was something would “stand out” amongst different faiths.
