DETAILS
1) Your term paper (10-12 double-spaced pages not including bibliography or evaluation paragraph) should look at a theme or topic in Judaism, or a comparison of two themes. It strengthens your work to have a thesis or idea about the material. It is fine to admit that not everything you read supports this idea. Or you can modify the idea.
2) The paper should combine information with your interpretation of the material. What is significant, or why? Are there differences of opinion (almost always “yes”)? Can you explain some of these?(not necessarily “solve” them.)
3) The paper is due via Canvas on Thursday, Nov. 29 (midnight).
4) You do not need a title page, but your paper should have a title.
5) The opening paragraph should give an idea of your theme or approach
6) Your final paragraph should be a conclusion.
7) Add an additional paragraph at the end, discussing the sources and your evaluation of them. If these include web sources, who created them and how did you decide they are valid?
8) Use at least 5-7 print or scholarly resources in addition to text books and encyclopedias. Books/articles can be accessed physically or electronically. If a book has multiple chapters by different authors, they can count as separate articles. (You can read these in print or on a computer).
9) Unless you have specific permission, using only web sites is not sufficient.
10) Be sure to document all sources (use footnotes or citations with page numbers). This is important!
11) Include a bibliography at the end. For any web resources, give the English title, source and date as well as a URL (web address).
12) Caution about sources: Some sources write as if either;
- i) “Our way” is the (one) right way in Judaism, (which is rarely true) or
- ii) Write as if there is no difference between what some group or leaders say that people should do and what people actually do. (Exaggerated example: “Judaism, Christianity, and Islam teach that you should not steal. Therefore, there are no Christians, Jews, or Muslims in jail for robbery.”)
13) Check for spelling and grammar errors before handing your paper in!
14) Professor’s “pet peeve:” Saying “All” about Jews –or any human group– is almost always wrong. Some generalization is necessary in writing, but phrases like “most” or a “large majority” are more likely to be accurate
