This is the third “paper.” A playwright places us in the play’s space and time in a specific and deliberate way. We can occupy it in a way that is as specific as a piece of architecture thanks to the plays. The architect has chosen the location of the front door, and that is how we must enter the structure. What do we find when we go inside? Is that a stairwell? Is there a lobby? Is this a living room? Different buildings (plays) will provide us with different entry experiences. Which character are we going to meet first? When do we first become aware of a problem that needs to be addressed? Should we laugh or feel sorry for them? What are our options for the future? Is it better to go left or right? Is it better to go up or down? The playwright is aware of this. (To put it another way, the director, the cast, and the stage manager all know.) By the time we get to the end of the play, we’ve figured it out. When the play is good, we realize that even the first step we took to get to this point was exactly the right one. To be clear, my use of the metaphor of architecture is a way of understanding the structure of a play in terms of how we experience it. I’m not asking you to analyze the play’s architecture or scenery, though those elements may influence how we approach it. Apply this “architectural” analysis to either Fires in the Mirror or Airness. You won’t have enough room or time to study every single moment of the game in these terms, so be selective. At the very least, describe how the play starts and ends, and try to demonstrate why the endpoint is well-suited to the beginning. Because we both read and saw these two plays, you can draw on either or both of our experiences in your analysis. Due by the first day of class on March 11th. Four to five pages are recommended.
