Successful completion of this assignment requires that you provide rationale, include examples, and reference content from the studies in your responses. Use the practice problem and two qualitative, peer-reviewed research article you identified in the Topic 1 assignment to complete this assignment. In a 1,000–1,250 word essay, summarize two qualitative studies, explain the ways in which the findings might be used in nursing practice, and address ethical considerations associated with the conduct of the study. Ethical Considerations
Maria Juliao: Grand Canyon University: NRS-433V Patients hospitalized especially young children for a long time, at least three months may develop a “hospitalization syndrome.” A condition designed for staying hospital in a long-term period. Signs and symptoms consist of the slow loss of orientation and cognition, loss of patient’s desire in their environment, lack of willingness to actively participate in group therapy, or keep constant contact with others. Naturally, events that provided happiness earlier on are done away with; the patients wish to stay in bed and prefer staying alone in their rooms the whole day. This syndrome has numerous causes, the most popular being; infection, excessive medication, stimulation of surgery, isolation, and water loss. Healthcare facilities in many hospitals across the globe carry out many activity programs to assist the social life of a patient; they include; cognitive training, cooking, memory training, and music therapy. It will be of greater importance to introduce animal assistance therapy into such activities, especially for those with an animal of their own. Also, hospital facilities may not provide opportunities to play a role in communication with patients as an essential portion of human life. Therefore, pet therapy, such as a dog, can act as a mediator in communication. Thus, acting as a facilitator in relationship building and gives a general topic for discussion. Thesis: To study the influence of pet therapy on children with cancer cases aged between ten to fifteen years. Population Fifty children who had cancer cases were actively engaged in this research. The sample group consisted of twenty-five patients (15 males, ten females), while the control category consisted of twenty-five patients (11 males, 14 mins). The participants included age between 10-15 years. The research took place in conditions relative to actual practice. The group under study was given rehabilitation with the help of a dog. The research also constituted inpatients that were to stay longer in the hospital. Patients that showed joy during an interaction with the dog and agreed to play with the dog were selected to be suitable candidates. Additionally, there was the use of sampled group theory in the engagement of a dog aged six years; the dog underwent therapy lessons based on obedience, the capability to cope in stressful situations. Intervention Diagnosis, testing, and rehabilitation helped to ensure the research leads to a possible outcome. The mood was determined by a Likert Scale that permitted patients to rank their general attitude on a scale range of 1 to 10 after each session of therapy. Patients in both the sampled group and the control group answered the same question. The question stated; rank the mood of the patient at the momentbased on a scale 1 to 10, while 1 being the worst mood and the 10 being the optimum rank. Also applied means for evaluating physiological processes and Barthel index based on procedures required by the nursing documentation. Comparison Music therapy was also done on both groups as an alternative convention for comparison purposes. Pet therapy improved psychological processes in a patient compared to other rehabilitation services offered in hospitals such as cooking and art therapy among the children. Outcome The sample group that engaged with the dogs displayed more improved changes in the general mood compared to the control group, while the control group had consistent results. There were no evident variances among the sampled cohort and control group when compared, considering both the initial and final output values. Also, no detectable deviations identified in values for blood pressure, nor the inter cohort differences identified between the initial and final result values. Lastly, initial and final output values examined for the Barthel index, and no significant difference between the two study groups was detected. Time The interactive sessions of the sample group understudy took place twice a week for consecutive 12 weeks, whereas, for the control cohort, two examinations happened in a week. Conclusion The use of the animal as healer in the rehabilitation process for long-term inpatients may not result in any shift in their physiological function. However, patients showed more considerable improvement from a psychological viewpoint. Therefore, pet therapy support mechanism is essential to well-being for children with cancer cases.
