Instructions for writing a paper/description
242 Psychology Reading, interpreting, and critiquing a unique research paper You’ve mostly read secondhand reports about psychological research in an introductory textbook so far in your psychology studies. While introductory textbooks give a good overview of the various topics covered by scientific psychology, the format does not allow for a detailed description of the methods used in specific studies. As a result, it’s nearly impossible for the reader to judge the quality of individual studies or the validity of the researchers’ conclusions (or rather, by the authors of the textbook). You will go straight to the source for this homework assignment and read an original research article. The goal of this exercise is to (1) get used to reading about scientific psychology in the more “dense” and methods-focused format provided by research articles, (2) get used to interpreting statistical results as they are typically reported in the research literature, and (3) get used to evaluating the validity of conclusions in light of the methods used and statistical results reported. What it is that you are expected to do Read the article linked below carefully (it’s on Blackboard) and then respond to the nine questions on the next page. Please include the original questions in the document you submit, as well as your answers below each one. To do well on this assignment, you must read the research article thoroughly and return to it as you attempt to answer the assignment’s questions. Doing a thorough job on this assignment will also help you prepare for the sixth (and final) homework assignment, which will be a continuation of this one. Article S. M. Ravizza, M. G. Uitvlugt, and K. M. Fenn (2017). Laptop internet use and classroom learning: logged in and zoned out. Psychological Science, vol. 28, no. 1, pp. 171-180. Deadline This assignment is due on Friday, April 3rd. Before 8 a.m., you must upload your assignment to SafeAssign and bring a hard copy to your TA at the start of class. Best of luck! Stahl, Tomas Questions What is the research question (problem statement) that you want to answer? (You get 2 points) Note that the authors are not required to state explicitly: “This is our main research question/problem statement).” However, if you read carefully enough, you’ll be able to spot it. In this study, what method of data collection (research) was used? (You get 2 points) Note that the authors may not state which research method they used explicitly, but it can be inferred from their description of what they did (i.e., from the procedure). What was the study’s final sample size, and what were the criteria for including participants in the analyses? (2 points) What was the study’s main dependent variable? (You get 2 points) Note. To back up your conclusion, you are expected to report and interpret the direction and strength (in statistical terms) of the relationships between the main independent and dependent variables as reported in this article. When you take all aspects of the research reported in this article into account, how would you evaluate this research? Do you see any weaknesses/limitations with the study? As you try to answer this question, think in terms of potential threats to different types of validity (statistical, construct, internal, external) (statistical, construct, internal, external). Are there any major threats that have not been appropriately addressed? (4 points)? |
