For additional help with this assignment, students should look over the e-book The Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner (Jongsma, Peterson, & Bruce, 2014).
Treatment plans are used by clinical and counseling psychologists to track a client’s progress toward short- and long-term goals. Depending on the clinical setting, the content of psychological treatment plans varies. When developing and implementing a treatment plan, the clinician’s theoretical orientation, evidence-based practices, and the client’s needs are all considered. A treatment plan usually includes the client’s presenting problem(s), behaviorally defined symptom(s), goals, objectives, and interventions determined by the clinician.
Students will take on the role of a clinical or counseling psychologist and develop a comprehensive treatment plan based on the same case study used in PSY645’s Psychiatric Diagnosis assignment to better understand the treatment planning process. A minimum of five peer-reviewed resources must be used to back up the plan’s recommendations. The following headings and content must be included in the Psychological Treatment Plan.
Behaviorally Defined Symptoms are a type of symptom that is defined by the behavior of the person
Define the client’s current problem(s) and make a diagnostic assessment.
Determine how the client’s behavior reflects the problem(s).
Make a list of the client’s mental and behavioral symptoms.
Long-Term Objective
Create a long-term treatment goal that represents the client’s desired outcome.
This objective should be broad in scope and not quantifiable.
Objectives for the Short Term
Create at least three short-term goals for achieving the long-term goal.
Each goal should be stated in terms that can be measured behaviorally. Objectives that are subjective or ambiguous are not acceptable. It should be stated, for example, that the goal will be met by a certain date or that a specific symptom will be reduced by a certain percentage.
Interventions
Determine at least one intervention to meet each of the short-term goals.
Compare at least three evidence-based theoretical orientations from which the client’s appropriate interventions can be chosen.
Explain the relationship between the theoretical orientation and the intervention that was chosen.
Give a justification for incorporating multiple theoretical orientations into this treatment plan.
Identify two to three treatment modalities that would be appropriate for the client (e.g., individual, couple, family, group, etc.).
Outside providers (e.g., psychiatrists, medical doctors, nutritionists, social workers, holistic practitioners, etc.) should be included in the intervention planning process to create a support network that will help the client achieve treatment goals.
Evaluation
Based on scholarly literature, make a list of the expected outcomes of each proposed treatment intervention.
In the evaluation, make sure to consider the person’s strengths, weaknesses, external stressors, and cultural factors (e.g., gender, age, disability, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and so on).
Evaluate the effectiveness of evidence-based intervention options.
Ethics
Examine and describe any ethical issues that may arise during the implementation of this treatment plan.
For resolving the ethical dilemma, cite specific ethical principles and any applicable law(s) (s).
