PSY274 Application Assignment #3 – Book Review and Course Summary
Application Assignment #3 – Book Review and Course Summary – 40
points
The Purpose of this Assignment
Social psychology is immediately applicable to most any element of everyday life.
One way to assess your understanding of the concepts in social psychology is to
look for them in elements of culture or society. Nearly any popular work of fiction
is rife with examples of social psychological concepts. For this assignment, you
will read a popular fiction novel of your choosing. Then, you will analyze it from a
social psychological point of view.
Application Assignment #3 is an individual assignment. You may not work with
another PSY 274 student, a student who previously took PSY 274, or with any
other person other than Dr. Clarke, Julian, and the SU writing center. You may not
use papers or parts of papers found on any online resource or any
physical/tangible resource (e.g., a friend’s paper, a paper found in files kept by
groups or clubs on campus). Be sure you are aware of all SU Academic Integrity
policies.
Instructions
1. Choose a popular fiction novel that you have not read before. You may
choose any novel that is of interest to you. Any genre, intended age, or topic
is acceptable. You may find this assignment easier to do if you choose a
book that has a topic clearly related to the course, several interesting
characters, a lot of interaction, and changes of situations or environments,
but most works of fiction will be fine.
2. Read the novel carefully, taking your time and taking notes. You may want
to read it twice – once early in the semester to get to know the book, and
once a bit later after we’ve covered more material in class.
3. To complete the assignment, first open a Word document. Create a header
that includes:
a. Your name
b. PSY 274
c. Application Assignment #3
d. Your book title and author
e. Your book’s genre
f. Your book’s intended audience
4. Complete the Basic Book Review prompts below.
5. Complete the Social Psychology Book Review prompts below.
6. Your responses to the prompts should be written in cohesive paragraphs,
using complete sentences, and using proper grammar/spelling. Your
assignment should be double-spaced and written in 12-point Times New
Roman font.
7. Please do NOT include the prompts themselves when writing your
responses. Just use the headings (Basic Book Review; Social Psychology
Book Review) and the numbering so that we know to which prompt you are
responding.
8. Please contact Dr. Clarke or Julian with any questions you may have about
this assignment. All Application Assignments are due on Tuesdays, so
you must ask Dr. Clarke or Julian for help by 5pm on the Friday
before the due date (and you should likely ask earlier, especially if
you want to meet or zoom to go over a draft). The weekend before
the due date should be used for revisions and final touches. Plan
ahead.
Basic Book Review Prompts
1. In 1 paragraph, describe the time period and setting of the novel.
2. In 2 paragraphs, describe the main plot of the novel.
3. Describe the 4 most important characters in about 2 sentences each. Your
sentences should describe the most important, plot-relevant aspects of the
characters.
4. Rate the book on a scale from 1 = not at all enjoyable to 7 = extremely
enjoyable. Describe the top 2 strengths and top 2 weaknesses of the book.
5. Would you recommend this book? If so, to whom? If not, why not?
Social Psychology Book Review Concept Analysis
1. In the book, find instances where social psychology is at work. You should
identify 10 separate concepts from any part of the course that appear in
the book. Your concepts can be interrelated (e.g., stereotypes,
discrimination) or can be completely unrelated. Your concepts should
come from different chapters in the book – don’t use more than one
concept from any one chapter. For each concept:
a. Note the chapter and page number.
b. UNDERLINE THE CONCEPT.
c. Define the concept in your own words.
d. Describe how the concept is manifested in the book using a specific
example and explaining it well enough that it is clear to the reader
that you understand what the concept means and that you have
correctly identified it. Give enough information about the setting,
interactions of characters, and background that the concept’s role in
the chapter and scene is clearly demonstrated.
Submission Instructions and Policies
1. This assignment must be submitted to Blackboard in the Assignments and
Exams > Application Assignments > Application Assignment #3 > Submit
HERE link before the deadline (December 6, 2022, at 10:00am ET). See the
Lecture Syllabus for information on the late submission policy.
2. Information about submitting an assignment via Turnitin can be found on
the Blackboard page in the “Application Assignments” folder. Turnitin
instructions are pinned to the top inside the folder.
3. When you submit, you will receive a Turnitin Originality Report, which
means that you can self-evaluate potential plagiarism and have an
opportunity to revise it. Your Turnitin Originality Report Similarity Score
should be GREEN. If it is yellow, orange, or red, you need to revise your
paper (e.g., make sure you don’t have direct quotations, make sure your
paraphrased sections are really and truly different from your source
material). We recommend submitting your assignment as early as possible
so that you have time to revise and resubmit if necessary, and so that you
have time to ask Dr. Clarke or Julian for help if needed.
4. Only the latest uploaded version of the assignment will be graded, as
determined by the version that is in Blackboard as of the due date/time,
NOT as determined by versions you show us on your own computer. If you
resubmit after the due date, your paper will be considered late.
