Overview
Project managers are integral to the success of any project. It is the central figure of a project manager who carries the overall responsibility of a project from planning, designing, implementation, evaluation, controlling, and finally closure of the project. The PM has to look into every detail of the project including the project budget, accessing resources, distribution, and allocation of resources, defining the scope and objectives of the project and creating work break down structures and workable schedules for completing the project. The success of any project like any business organization is dependent on its resources and the aspect which is more important than the presence of resources is the management of these resources and management is the responsibility of the project manager. The project manager along with his/ her team determines the way resources are used to achieve the project goals. This paper will explore in detail the role of project manager for the success of any project (Munns & Bjeirmi, 2016).

In between, there are many different domains that are covered by the project manager. These domains include project planning, project goals, team making, resource gathering, resource allocation and distribution, project budget, creating a schedule of the project through work breakdown structure, project budget and cost analysis, and role of manager as a team leader. All these topics will be discussed in detail in this paper (Devi, 2013).
Annotated Bibliography:
- Anantatmula, V. S. (2015). Project Manager Leadership Role in Improving Project Performance. Engineering Management Journal, 13-22.
This article is written by Vittal S. Anantatmula who is affiliated with Western Carolina University. The author has tried to explore the role of project manager with respect to his or her leadership role. The author stated that irrespective of the nature of the project, a project manager is a ‘manager’ whose primary responsibility is to manage the resources, finances, and people under his/ her authority. It further explained that the project manager must act as a leader and focus on managing its project team like leaders lead organizations. The suggested approach is to focus more on human resources (project team) because if the human capital is satisfied, motivated, and well-managed, it will be able to manage the rest of resources in an effective manner. Hence the project manager is also responsible for keeping the team motivated and dedicated. Furthermore, the project manager is responsible for developing and sustaining an effective and healthy work environment. This research used literature review, surveys, and structured personal interviews for comprehending the role of project managers according to leadership and management theories. Learning from this article will help in understanding the role of the manager in this paper.
- Devi, T. (2013). The Role of Project Manager in Improving the Projects. International Journal of Engineering Research and Development, 27-29.
This article has been written by T. Rajani Devi, she is affiliated with the education sector. In this paper, she explored the role and responsibilities of the project manager. According to the author, the project manager is the leader of the project who has to take full responsibility for the project. He/ she also has a wide range of authority in making any project related decisions but the responsibility of the project from planning and initiation to designing and execution and monitoring and controlling lies on the shoulder of the manager. All the small and big aspects of budget allocation, resource allocation, and distribution are decided by the project manager. The article further explored the issues and challenges faced by the project manager. These issues are generally management-oriented. If the project manager has the key attributes to manage resources, finances, and people, he or she will be successful in achieving the project goals. This is the key distinction between the successful and unsuccessful project manager. Managers often face issues from external factors but these issues have to cater to effective internal planning which is again the responsibility of the manager. The management practices defined and determined by the manager ensures that project goals are achieved in an effective and efficient manner. This article will help in understanding the role of managers in the under consideration paper.
- Munns, A., & Bjeirmi, B. (2016). The role of project management in achieving project success. International Journal of Project Management, 81-87.
This article has been co-authored by AK Munns and BF Bjeirmi. Both authors are associated with the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Dundee, United Kingdom. The sole focus of this article is to create a distinction between the roles of project management and the project itself in the successful achievement of goals. Although it is generally believed that management by project managers is the only determinant of the success of the project but it is not true. Although there is no denying that the project manager and their management techniques have a central role in the success of the projects but the selection of the project and its goals also play a critical role in its success. The management of projects often includes planning, cost, time, and quality but the initiation decision that a project has to be launched is not decided by the project manager. This distinction between the project and project management is very thin. The authors of this appear tried to identify the point of confusion that mix project and project management and hence blur the responsibility of success or failure. The outcome of this paper will help in comprehending the responsibilities of the manager in the paper under consideration.
