Assignment: Practicum: Practicum Experience
As your practicum proceeds, consider the topics addressed this week. Conduct research to further your understanding of how issues related to health information systems and other resources, such as financials, staffing, and materials, could influence the implementation of your proposed change. In addition, you reflect on the effectiveness of your practicum experiences for fostering your professional development. What challenges are you encountering or would you anticipate at this point? If necessary, what can be done to improve the situation?
To prepare:
Reflect on the learning objectives and activities you developed for your practicum experience during Week 1. Also, consider the leadership competencies introduced in Weeks 2 and 3.
What new skills or insights have you gained thus far in your practicum experience? How do you think this is impacting your leadership development and the planning of your proposed change? What adjustments might need to be made to your leadership presence within the practicum environment—or your plan for change? What additional supports would you find most beneficial right now?
To complete:What new skills or insights have you gained through your practicum experiences? How is this impacting your leadership development and planning related to your proposed change? What additional supports would be beneficial?
My discussion:
The transformation process must be planned adequately for the intended changes to yield desired outcomes. The DNP program supports the translation of knowledge into best practices because graduates serve as change agents, reflect on practicum experiences, and impact professional growth.
In my practicum site, we still use paper charting. My goal is to assist the center in adopting electronic health records (EHR). Lewin’s change theory informs my plan (White, Dudley-Brown, & Terharr, 2016). The first phase of my project involves creating the idea that change is required. The process allows the change agent to encourage others to embrace a new approach to performing tasks while gathering organizational support. Next, I will move towards the desired changes. The phase involves helping colleagues learn about EHRs, working collaboratively, recruiting role models to guide the desired change, and allowing coworkers to adjust to the new system (Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley, 2019). Finally, the clinic will incorporate the use of EHR as part of its standard procedures.
Undertaking scheduled and supervised work has allowed me to bridge theory and practice. The experience has also enabled me to enhance my leadership, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and time management abilities. However, I still need to improve my advocacy skills. My primary concern is the cost of planning and implementing change while ensuring the quality and safety of care.
The practicum program allows me to reflect on and apply the scientific underpinning of the profession. Secondly, the program encourages accountability in spearheading quality improvement by reviewing best-practices and engaging in research projects for knowledge development (Pritham & White, 2016). Moreover, I will be better prepared to use technological innovation to enhance the delivery of care. Also, interprofessional working will improve my ability to manage multidisciplinary teams (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006). Another learning experience relates to acquiring critical thinking, problem-solving, and advocacy abilities to promote population health and address healthcare disparities. The DNP essentials will enhance my nursing practice and prepare me for more advanced roles as I pursue numerous opportunities.
