Poli 113 Chinese and Japanese Political Thought
- What is the purpose of the Socratic (or Noble) Lie, and how is it related to the notion of political legitimacy? ( Answer 150 words )

Francis yang : ( to Chloe)
I’d like to include that Plato mentioned that part of the Noble Lie was the concept that although all of the members of society were of varying qualities of metal, because they were all still metals born of the same Earth they were all siblings. This aspect of the Noble Lie was important because it would be difficult to maintain order without it; simply being told that you are bronze or iron can make acceptance of the fact difficult and subsequently makes people of higher quality metal easy targets to vent out one’s frustrations with their lot, but when told that the people of higher status are essentially family it becomes much easier to accept both one’s own position and the people in power because you feel like you’re supporting them rather than being exploited or used.
- In your view, was Confucius’s philosophy (in his time) politically radical, conservative, or reactionary? Why? ( Answer 150 words )

Ruillin hu :
Personally speaking, I think Confucius’s philosophy is more radical because this philosophy directly challenges some other beliefs in Confucius’s time, and he supports ideas that people at the time did not widely accept. As legalist Han Feizi criticized, although Confucius claimed that his theories originated from the ancestors, other beliefs appealed to the same ancestral worship but supported different ideals (Hoston 47). Since there existed debates on the essence of the claimed reactionary political ideas, it is safe to say that there was no consensus on who the reactionaries were. Although some may quickly assume the conservative nature of Confucianism, it must not be overlooked that there existed other mainstream and non-Confucian political practices. Since rulers and the subjects might have been more used to some different philosophies, it is possible that people would feel more radical about Confucius’s belief when Confucianism challenged their political understandings, which means they were unlikely to think of it as the philosophy of recovering traditions.

- The German sociologist Max Weber suggested that legal-rational authority is the most modern basis of legitimate authority, implying that, because it was based on rules created by rational individuals, it could establish the most desirable — and most stable — basis of authority, which would presumably be that of a democratic political system.. Do you think that his view has been corroborated by our recent experience with the 2016 and 2020 U.S. presidential election? (You should feel free to take into account other examples, such as Weimar Germany, where Adolf Hitler won his position as chancellor legitimately in the 1920s and then usurped powers not granted to him by the Weimar Constitution when elected, and the Philippines, where Ferdinand Marcos legitimately won election as president in 1965 and then imposed martial law in 1972 to avoid losing power.) Answer 150 words
Your post should reflect careful thought about Weber’s ideas and recent as well as historical world events such as those mentioned in the prompt.

Yifei ren:
Hi Chloe! I love your sharing and I think we have the same ideas. you say that the presidential elections contained both legitimate and flawed democracies. In my response to the prompt, I claim that the first part of Weber’s argument which legal-rational authority is created by the rational individual can be verified by both the 2016 and 2020 elections; however, the second part of his argument which legal-rational authority can create the most stable authority is not supported by the 2020 election. You mention the terror attack on the capital in 2020 which is a powerful fact against Weber’s statement. In the last part of your response, you say that rules created by individuals are not always rational because they lead to turmoil. However, I think it is not because the people who design rules are irrational but the people who should follow the rule. They are the major reason for the great upheaval.
- Does the notion of the Socratic lie or noble lie articulated by Socrates in Plato’s Republic play a more significant role in micro-level or macro-level approaches to the study of revolutionary change? Select one example of such a micro- or macro-level and show how the notion of the noble lie applies in it. ( answer 150 words )

Jing zoo :
Hi Patrick, I agree with your analysis, and I also think that noble lies play a micro-level role in the study of revolutionary change. And the micro-level role is more at the base of the changes that need to be made gradually and focuses on people and people. And the noble lie requires two sides, the will of the leader and the will of the led. Like the benevolent emperor, you listed, if the emperor is not willing to lead the people, or the people are not willing to follow the emperor then the noble lie cannot be realized. A noble lie can only be called “noble” if both sides are willing to engage in or carry out revolutionary reforms. Those inside the walls do not need to know what is going on outside the walls; those outside the walls will not know what is going on inside the walls. In this way, revolutionary change can logically take place.
