Paper Instructions and Topics.
In a type-written/word-processed paper of four pages in length, no more, no less, please address one of the essay topics given below. Papers are to be on 8.5/11.0 inch white paper, 1 inch margins all around, double line spacing, normal font size (no larger than the text on this page), no gaps between paragraphs, with appropriate footnotes (preferably) or endnotes for all citations to text sources and for all quotations. No ugly parenthetical citations allowed within the body of your text. Clearly number all pages. A separate bibliography or Works Cited page is unnecessary. Incorporate appropriate bibliographic references in your footnotes or endnotes. Correct usage of standard English grammar and spelling is imperative. Glaring and repeated mistakes in standard grammar and spelling will be clearly noted by the instructor and students’ final grades will be reduced for commission of such errors. When in doubt on questions of grammar or spelling, check with the instructor via e-mail, consult a dictionary (every student should own his or her own, top-of-the-line dictionary and use it!–if you don’t have one, buy a good one!), or examine a printed or online guide to grammar, usage, and proper spelling. (Remember, badly written papers filled with common and inexcusable errors make you look uneducated and make it appear that you do not care how you present yourself and your opinions to your readers and to a broader public. Take justifiable pride in your work, proofread it carefully and multiple times before submission, and always keep a backup copy of all written work on computer disk.) And recall that people who are or who appear to be uneducated and lacking in self-esteem do not tend to get very far in the real world of which this very Greek university (and every university) is also a part.
Students are to understand that this exercise is not a research paper in that it does not require any more extensive reading in sources outside of class texts already encountered nor does it require students to pursue independent research in other library or online sources. Reading the selected class masterwork referenced below will be sufficient and may be supplemented by review of relevant class textbook chapters. The essence of good university-level instruction in World cultural history is more time for students to ponder and analyze, personally, in group discussion, through critical readings and re-readings, and through critical written work (papers), central, problematic, and demanding sources in the cultural history of the world. In this class, these sources are our key masterwork readings. For this Plato essay students are fully expected to go over the source text very carefully and to draw from that primary reading the key passages/quotations–appropriately footnoted or endnoted–through which they will attempt to answer the questions posed or to justify their own personal line of argument or interpretation of the text. For background readings relevant to this text/project, students are invited to review their textbook entries for Plato as cited above.
All students will be graded on a strict point scale for all written work. All students must prepare and hand in with their essays a rough and a final outline of their entire essay. Rough Outline should just include the prime topic questions written out verbatim, word-for-word, and arranged in neat, sequential paper sections. This outline should be divided up clearly to follow the chosen topic’s exact questions. For your headings of key outline sections, use text taken directly from the topic questions. The detailed outline must be a precise plan of the entire essay, showing every section of the main paper body headed by the prime topic question to be answered in that section and with explicit, verbatim citations from source texts written out in the outline that each student will use to cite and justify his or her answers given to the prime topic questions. All final student outlines MUST include written out the verbatim quotations from text sources that students will use to justify their responses to the topic questions. In this manner students may clearly write efficiently and effectively from citation to citation, crafting a more coherent and well-justified argument of their opinions. All students must prepare detailed outlines of all essays.
