Taking a Stance
Below you will find the topic for Essay 2.
Essay 2 Topic
With a rise in Internet use, millions of people around the globe have flocked to a variety of social networking sites to connect with others. Sites such as Facebook and Myspace have allowed people to reconnect or to meet for the first time. With the ability to create personal profiles, to include pictures, and to supply personal and professional information on these sites, people are divulging a lot of information over the Internet. Some people argue that social networking sites offer people the opportunity to build a stronger and ever-expanding community of friends from around the globe (a global community). Others argue that social networking sites cause problems because of the amount of information (whether negative or positive) that people provide to friends and strangers.
For this essay assignment, consider the following:
For this essay, you will want to do the following:
Utilize and analyze some essays in your textbook as well as outside sources (a minimum of 2 sources are required)
APA Format:
Length is 3 pages
Font: Times New Roman
Spacing: double-spaced
The main purpose of this assignment is to develop an argument regarding the essay topic. You will need evidence and examples to help you formulate a stronger argument. Also, remember to utilize outside sources that agree and help to strengthen your position in this essay; therefore, a minimum of two sources are required. With either position in this topic, there are plenty of critics who offer their opinions as well. You should have little problem finding these sources.
You should provide a min. of 3 pages other than a Reference Page , Times New Roman, 12-point font, and double-spaced for this essay. You must also format your essay using APA format. Remember, a strong essay will have a clear thesis statement that establishes your position. The remainder of your essay will support your thesis statement with reasons and evidence.
Homework Assignment Instructions
Upon reading the Essay 2 prompt, you will consider your position on the essay topic. Your task for this part of the Homework Assignment is to start with an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement regarding the above essay topic. Remember that a thesis is the claim or main idea or premise of an argument, so you will create your claim in this part of the Homework Assignment. For some information about writing thesis statements, please read Tips and Examples for Writing Thesis Statements (Purdue Online Writing Lab).
Remember that a thesis statement (your claim/argument) is usually placed toward the end of the introductory paragraph. By including your thesis statement in your introductory paragraph, you allow your reader to understand your argument early in the essay. Once you have an introductory paragraph with a strong thesis statement, the remainder of your essay will flow better.
Part II: Using Appeals
After you have written your introduction and thesis statement, you should consider what you will use in order to convince your audience. For each – ethos, pathos, and logos – write a paragraph in which you describe how you would use this appeal in your essay.
Developing an Outline
According to Chapter 1 of your textbook, a good method to drafting an argumentative essay is to use an outline as a template. An outline allows the writer to take an important step toward substantive development of an essay. What is wonderful about an outline is that the subsequent rethinking of the argument and the additional research that result becomes more apparent using this method.
Your task for this part of the Homework Assignment is to create an outline for your essay. You will include the introductory paragraph with thesis statement that you created. After your introductory paragraph with thesis statement, you will provide an outline of your body paragraphs and conclusion. Remember that your outline gives a bird’s-eye view of the whole scheme of your essay. Also, an outline will prompt you in the drafting process. Outlines serve to remind writers of the basic strategy for developing a sound argument; they should not be followed mindlessly as if they were some unalterable blueprint for constructing a house. For an explanation of outlines, please read Why and How to Create a Useful Outline and Sample Outlines (Purdue Online Writing Lab).
Along with your outline, you will also submit two possible outside sources that you can use for your argument. You may use essays from your textbook as sources (Part II: Reading Clusters). If you provide online sources, make sure to provide the author’s name, article title, and the website.
Remember that at this point, you have learned about two different methods of organizing an argument. You should present two outlines for this part of the assignment: Classical and Toulmin. You should then write a paragraph or two in which you explain which organization you are likely to follow and why.
Providing Body Paragraphs
Now that you have created an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement and an outline, you will provide a draft of your body paragraphs along with your introductory paragraph. As you develop your body paragraphs for Essay 2, remember that your body paragraphs should provide evidence and examples (utilizing your outside sources) to support the main argument (your thesis statement).
By providing completed body paragraphs, it will help you inch closer towards a completed essay. You have already completed two major steps in the writing process, so body paragraphs will provide a more complete essay.
P ART II I
After you write your body paragraphs, you should write a couple of paragraphs in which you describe why you chose to organize your ideas this way, whether you are following the Classical, Toulmin, or Rogerian mode. Why is this particular organization useful for your argument?
PART I V
T he Completed Essay
The final process in developing your argumentative essay is to submit the completed essay of Essay 2. You have already completed an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement, an outline, and complete body paragraphs. Now you must put everything together into a complete essay while utilizing APA format. Remember to include a conclusion in your essay.
When you submit your completed essay, please make sure that your essay meets the following requirements. The following list is meant to ensure that your essay is complete and ready to submit. You DO NOT have to submit your responses to these seven (7) statements.
Your essay has an interesting introductory paragraph with a strong thesis statement.
Your body paragraphs provide strong evidence related to the thesis statement.
Your essay utilizes at least 2 outside sources to support your argument.
Your essay utilizes in-text citations in APA format when incorporating sources.
Your conclusion restates your main idea (thesis statement) and the supporting details.
Your conclusion ends with a lasting impression.
Your essay lists your sources on a References page at the end of the essay.
Recap: Your final draft of Essay 2 is complete with:
thesis statement
an introductory paragraph
body paragraphs
a conclusion
a minimum of two (2) outside sources
Part V
Avoiding Fallacies
After you have finished writing your essay, you should look back for any logical fallacies. If you find any in your essay, correct them as best you can, and then write a couple of paragraphs in which you describe how that fallacy is easy to commit, and how it can impact an argument. If you do not find any fallacies in your writing, choose a fallacy you think you have committed in the past and write on that.

Looking further into market segmentation, identify and describe four or more ways markets can be segmented. How do firms decide which market segments to target? Why is segmentation so important?
Let’s look at a military base. A military base has a very interesting and challenging segmentation. The dynamics are always changing. I worked for a company that helped retailers identify its customers and segmentation groupings. Based on this information and a characteristic known as “drive time,” our research models could assist retailers with identifying a location for the next store and then predict sales for the next 1-3 years. There were always some locations that were anomalies…..military bases and tourist destinations. There were quite a few unpredictable variables in these locations that made it difficult to forecast sales and complete sales trend analysis because they are unique locations that can’t be replicated.
Here is an informative site on segmentation;

What would happen if a company did create and implement a segmentation strategy? Can you think of any companies that do not use some type of segmentation strategy, but instead, focus on mass marketing and communications? Are these companies successful?
