Piagets Theory of Cognitive Development Assignment
This week you are learning about Jean Piaget’s theory of stage development. Review the criteria for a stage theory of cognitive development on p. 20 of your text. Note that stage theorists believe that each stage must build on the previous stage, that they follow a stable order, and are believed to be universal across all cultures.
Reflecting on your own development and your observations of the development of others, do you agree with stage development theory? Why or why not? Support your stance with your research and examples.

After reading Jean Piaget’s stage theory of development, I find that I do agree with his point of view. Paiget explains 5 different criterias of stage theory including the following:
Qualitative change which is explained as differences in kind or type rather than differences in amount of something. 2. Unified structures are described as the existence of an integrated cognitive structure or structures that guide and restrict an individual’s ability to process information.
Progression stage, this is when each stage builds on the previous one. 4. Stable order is a stage that suggests that once one has advanced to a stage there can be no retraction or skipping of stages.
- Universality is a stage that is considered to be universal across cultures, and is fundamental to human nature. (Galotti, 2016, pg. 20) I can agree with a few of these stage theories personally. I believe that progression stage and stable order make the most sense to me. In my personal experience I have come to find that once I have reached a certain stage in my life I have never regressed to a previous stage.
For example, once I have learned how to drive as a teenager and to cook for myself in my early 20’s I have never once needed to backtrack to these stages. I believe it’s all a part of just learning and once we learn something it’s hard to unlearn it. I believe as humans we are built to have the urge to better ourselves and strive to move forward. Universality is another stage that I felt I could agree strongly with.
I have come across many different people from many different cultures and I find when we discuss things like religion and family values I always hear the same goals of keeping their faith and finding someone that they can spend their life with. I believe that we were designed this way which means that we were not that different from each other at all.

I definitely agree with Jean Piaget’s theory of stage development. As I look back on my son development “The Preoperational Stage of Cognitive Development” stood out to me. As stated in the text book, “This theory last from around 18 to 24 months until the child is approximately 6 years old.
Preoperational children have finally acquired the ability to mentally represent objects, events, and ideas, which broadens their cognitive abilities considerably: They can use language, pretend, and can use what Piaget called the semiotic function, using one thing to represent another, as when a child uses rocks as hamburgers during a play episode or when a child uses the name of a friend in conversations.” I try my hardest not to brag on my son, but its hard not to when he is saying, knowing and doing things you wouldn’t think a child at those ages would be doing.
One day we were riding in the car and I just heard him in the backseat saying different colors and I didn’t think anything of it just thought he was randomly saying it, it was then when I turned around and saw that he was holding a toy that was the colors of what he was shouting out.
He was actually turning the toy and saying each color, I was so amazed because he was just 2 1/2 at the time. At 3 he came to me with one of the magnets off the fridge and said, ” look a rectangle”, I was like yes baby that’s right. So I got another one and asked what is this and he answered correctly.
At the age of 4 he recited the pledge of allegiance in front of his class without having to be fed the words (may not be a big deal for most, but that was a very proud moment for me). Now being 5, he is saying words and using them correctly. I recently found out he knew what teleport, a tie in a race and distracted meant. I’ve been a proud mother for some time now.
