As I am.
Elaborate on the idea of the shared essential character of human beings and present at least one variant of it related to avocados. The discussion on how the modern/avocado and postmodern/artichoke notions of the self differ will help show the contrast between this account and the artichoke philosophy of the self. Use the analysis you developed in Week 2 and 3 to build your essay in Part I.Also known as truth and actuality
Discuss how these ideas of the self are disclosed in art by choosing an example of a character/narrator/subject in a work of art (novel, poem, film, graphic novel, short story, television show, song, painting, etc.) who you think captures the avocado/modern idea that we have an essential, shared human nature and that the self and the world are distinct entities. To find an example of a work of art that depicts the postmodern ideas of the self, first, choose a work of art that includes the concept of the artichoke. As you examine these two case studies, consider the following points and questions:For Descartes, is the self and the material universe distinct? Can you give some instances of pieces of artwork that depict the concept of the subject (mind, soul, concept) and the object (object, world, body) being distinct? Schelling holds that the self and the world are organic entities, that is, self and world are integral wholes. Artistic creativity could illustrate this unity of subject and object in two ways.
Is art mimetic or is it a tool of modifying ourselves and reality? Is it a goal-oriented goal, granting us the opportunity to experience catharsis, as Aristotle says? The views of art being both a representation and a transformational process are similar to the avocado versus artichoke metaphor.
Art and philosophy are inseparable
How are art and philosophy related? “Art,” in the view of philosophers such as Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Heidegger, is the ultimate manifestation of truth and certainty. Empiricism and rationalism believe in the “natural stance,” while phenomenology rejects it.
Do some genres of art (music, for example) reveal the essence of the thing being expressed more clearly? How is that possible? To what extent are the ideas and purposes of art dependent on the geographic location?
