The Likert Scale will be used, an instrument designed to determine the opinion or attitude of a subject containing a number of declarative statements with a scale after each statement (Gray, Grove & Sutherland, 2017).

Fifty sample participants will be selected when in their last semester of a Nurse Practitioner program. Once divided into two subgroups of twenty-five participants, the proportionate stratified sampling method will be used for the design. This research study will utilize the quantitative (noninterventional) descriptive research design. The data collectors will obtain the data from the study participants beginning three months after each individual begins employment on their first job as a practicing NP. Data collection will continue on a quarterly basis (every three months) for one year and then three months past their one-year anniversary of employment as a practicing NP. Consistency is important during the data collection process, therefore every data collection date will occur on a Wednesday, 1 hour post the study participants’ lunch break and in a calm, routine setting. Multiple data collectors will be trained, to officiate this1:1 process. The study participants will not be permitted to work weekends and holidays, which may result in a variation of responses. Study participants will be completing the questionnaire themselves on the computer.

Level of Measurement on the tool: The level of measurement of the hemoglobin a1c instrument is mmol/mol (Heinemann & Freckmann, 2015). The results of the test are given in percentages, as the percentage represents the approximate amount of glucose present in the blood over a 3-month period (Heinemann & Freckmann, 2015).
Description of Type of scale: The scale that will be used for this experiment will be the percentage values of the hemoglobin a1c. 5.7% and lower is considered a normal blood glucose level (Heinemann & Freckmann, 2015). From 5.7% to 6.4% is considered an elevated blood glucose level and prediabetes (Heinemann & Freckmann, 2015). 6.5 % and higher is considered diabetic (Heinemann & Freckmann, 2015). By utilizing these measurements, the study will be able to determine if the consumption of 36 ounces per day of soda over a 30-day period will increase the participant’s hemoglobin a1c level. The data collection procedure would include first identifying individuals with a prediabetes diagnosis. Once the individuals agree to participate in the study, blood will be drawn to determine the participant’s current hemoglobin a1c. After three months, the participants from both the experimental and the control groups will have their hemoglobin a1c tested again.
