OB Clinical: Cultural Awareness Oral Report Instructions
Students will work in groups of three or four, in the case of an uneven number of students in a clinical group, one group will be made up of 3 students.
- The cultural heritage selection is to be approved by the clinical instructor. The choices are African (may choose a country or region), African American, Appalachian, Asian (may choose a country or region), Hispanic (may choose a country or region), Indian, or Middle Eastern. You may not select your own cultural heritage.
- The presentation length should be a minimum of 20 minutes to a maximum of 30 minutes. It is possible for partners to receive different grades depending on their individual and team effort.
- The presentations will take place on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. All groups will present on this day.
- The presentation must follow an outline. The outline must be typed, and a copy given to the instructor and the other students.
- Items to be covered in the outline and during the presentation:
- a) General cultural health care beliefs (10 points)
- b) Prevalent chronic illnesses of the ethnicity/cultural group (10 points)
- c) Pregnancy and birth rites or rituals (20 points)
- d) Infant feeding practices (10 points)
- e) Death rites or rituals (10 points)
- f) Eye contact practices (5 points)
- g) Touch practices (5 points)
- h) Food practices as related to health/illness and food intolerances (10 points)
- Utilize at least 2 peer-reviewed nursing journal articles per person. Articles from nursing journals must be no more than 5 years old. Submit copies of the articles to your clinical instructor at the time of the presentation. (10 points/person)
- Contact BCCC’s Library for assistance finding and obtaining the actual articles.
- Include a separate page for references. The reference page format is to follow the American Psychological Association (APA) format and must be submitted to your instructor at the time of the presentation. Your textbook may be included as a reference. (10 points)
