Section 1: The Application of Theory
Course Resources The Resources area for this course contains a variety of reference materials that will help you to complete the course activities. It is suggested that you become familiar with these resources before you begin the activities. While textbooks are often integral for a doctoral-level course, increasing emphasis on primary sources is expected. In every doctoral-level course, students should find, read, and comment on peer-reviewed articles and synthesize their readings with their own ideas. Library References used for research need to be peer reviewed/scholarly journals, which can be found by searching the Northcentral University Library databases. These journals typically have the following characteristics:
– Articles are reviewed by a panel of experts before they are accepted for publication.
– Articles are written by a scholar or specialist in the field.
– Articles report on original research or experimentation.
– Articles are often published by professional associations.
– Articles utilize terminology associated with the discipline.
Information literacy is a set of skills that help you to find and appropriately apply information. Introduction This section will review facts, theory, concepts, and variables. Theory is always a tough section of any course. Theory is also an important foundation that must be laid before building to the next phase. For example, it is essential that students understand theories of relationships between variables and causality, before progressing in their dissertation program. Equally essential, before selecting a methodology for your dissertation, you, as the Principle Investigator for your study, need to know the underlying theory behind the methodology of your proposed research. For example, if you undertake a quantitative study, it is important that you become familiar with quantitative theory.

Activity 1: Theoretical Framework (10 Points)

Main Task: Compose a Theoretical Perspective Based on your research interest, write a Theoretical Perspective section for your envisioned dissertation research. Theoretical frameworks provide a basis for the study; examples include social and psychological theories, organizational theories, leadership theories, economic theories, and educational theories. Support your paper with a minimum of 5 resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included. Length: 5-7 pages not including title and reference pages Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy. Section 2: The Theory of Management
In this section, you will be exploring validity as it applies to measurement. It is important to understand the concept of validity early in the process of your research so that you will be able to identify your measurements as valid. The key topics for this section are Theoretical Framework and External, Internal, and Construct Validity.

Activity Resources
Main Task: Prepare a Validity Paper Based on your topic of interest, write a paper in which you compare and contrast the characteristics of external, internal, and construct validity. In addition, please identify the threats to external and construct validity. Please discuss how validity issues could impact your envisioned research. Support your paper with a minimum of 5 resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included. Length: 5-7 pages not including title and reference pages Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Section 3: Ethics in Research
You can probably name a study or two where unethical research was conducted on human beings. At times, this can cause significant harm. For example, a group of rural black men living near Tuskegee, Alabama thought they were being given free medical care for syphilis when in reality they were denied the cure. The Tuskegee case is only one example of researchers treating study subjects unethically, which has caused the government to impose federal regulations to assure that all studies involving humans are ethical and truthful to subjects. Northcentral University takes its responsibility very seriously and requires all research by any university member to be reviewed by the Institutional Review Board. In this section, you will explore the requirements for research at Northcentral.
