New York State Laws on School Security
New York has passed legislation to guarantee that school safety is a top priority. All school staff are responsible for creating and maintaining a safe learning environment. The state has adopted a regulation requiring that all teacher certification programs provide an introduction to the following statutes in their curriculum:(H) a method of instructing students in the prevention of child abduction, as defined by Education Law section 803-a; preventing alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse, as defined by Education Law section 804; providing safety education, as defined by Education Law section 806; and providing instruction in fire and arson prevention, as defined by Education Law section 808;
This link will take you to the complete texts of these four statutes.
The first-term course, US Schools in Social Context, in the MAT program discusses these legislation with a discussion assignment. Each student visits the websites of two school districts in the state of New York to research how they approach the four statutes in this online written forum. The student’s written perspective on how teachers are accountable for being aware of these rules and being prepared to intervene when they discover that a student’s safety is in jeopardy due to the risks addressed by the laws is next presented.
