Narrated PowerPoint Juvenile Crime Data
Description
Your Narrated PowerPoint: Juvenile Crime Data file will consist of the following: a cover slide; introductory slide; three PowerPoint slides complete with talking points in your notes, graphs, tables and/or figures; a voiceover narrative on the topic of juvenile crime data; a closing slide; and a reference slide. Your presentation should depict reported crime data for a specific category of crime or criminal issue relevant to juvenile offenders in your area.
Please access the Student Resource Center for help on how to create a Narrated PowerPoint.
In this assignment, do the following steps.
Step 1: Identify a category of crime or criminal justice issue that you would like to learn more about.
Select your category of crime or criminal issue from one component of your local criminal justice system (law enforcement, courts, or corrections). For example, if you choose law enforcement, you may want to look at arrests for delinquent acts. If you choose the courts, you may want to look at how many go before a judge in a week. In corrections, you may want to examine how many are detained. Be creative and examine data that you want to learn more about.
Step 2: Research and gather data for comparison of three locations.
Begin your research by looking on the Internet at official government websites, FBI Uniform Crime Reports, Bureau of Justice Statistics, and your State Department of Juvenile Justice. See the Web Links section in Course Resources underneath Technology & Resources also for research material.
One of the locations for your presentation can be your city, county, or state.
Next, identify two other cities, counties, or states that are comparable to your first choice. For example, if you live in Chicago, Illinois, you may want to use Houston, Texas and Brooklyn, New York for comparison. They are similar in population, and they are comparable in size (Chicago population: 2.7 million; Houston population: 2.5 million; and Brooklyn: 2.4 million).
Step 3: Obtain information on at least three demographic areas such as education, race, ethnicity, crime, gender, sexuality, or economics. Once you identify three demographic areas, you will compare them to your chosen area of interest (category of crime or criminal justice issue for each identified location and area).
Prepare the data you gathered and create charts and/or graphics to present the data.
Be sure to standardize your data; for example; .05, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5. The numbers are standardized because they are at .5 intervals. You want to be able to compare data.
Step 4: Develop a question you would like answered based on the data you gathered. What juvenile delinquency program or initiatives are available in your area to address the crime or criminal justice issue you chose?
For example, if your chosen area of research is juvenile graduation rates, based on the data gathered regarding the graduation rate in Chicago, Houston, and Brooklyn, you might ask “why is the dropout rate higher for females in Houston than in Chicago and Brooklyn?” Important: You do not have to answer this question and should not use this question as your own.
Step 5: Once you complete your PowerPoint, add the narration explaining what is demonstrated on each slide.
