Take a look at the collection called “In the Nood”(Nude). The nude human figure has been a common subject for centuries. Why do you suppose painters use the nude as subject matter? From the readings in your e-text, what can you draw upon to support your comments?
Select one painting to illustrate your thoughts. Be sure to be specific in your comments about the artist’s language – color, line, texture, composition, subject matter, and also comment on the artist’s intent.
We are starting Discussion #4 and I have asked that you comment on the nude in art, why its been so often used as subject matter and comment on the e-text where you may have picked up some ideas about the use of the nude figure in history.
I have noticed that in your observations of the artworks during previous discussions, you may have not picked up on the artist’s used of visual cues. So try and think about this for this particular discussion. The first part is to discuss the nude in history but then I have asked you to select an artwork from In the Nood, in the MOBA collection.
Be sure to comment on:
1) specific color palette – what specific colors did the artist use and how? How does that tell you about the “story” or artist’s intent in the painting.
2) brushstrokes – are the brushstrokes visible to the eye or are they subtle? are they thick, thin, broad or slight? How does the use of brushstrokes provide any clues to the viewer about the artist’s intent?
3) what about the composition provides clues to you the viewer? (arrangement of shapes/forms within the picture frame)
4) what is the subject matter and how does color, brushstrokes, or composition help the viewer understand the painting/artwork?
After you type your initial post, then read through the other entries and reply directly to at least two classmates
Part 2
In this video, Dr Beth Harris and Dr Steven Drucker discuss the differences between the Renaissance and the Baroque eras in art history. They do this using the examples of Gianlorenzo Bernini’s “David” vs. Michelangelo’s “David”.
