my classmates’ replies are below. I just need a small reply to both- at least 150 each The tuberculosis epidemic, originating in 1993, has caused lasting and catastrophic effects on people across the nation. The tuberculosis infection is caused by the microorganism, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is a lethal airborne infection that has caused more than 1.8B infections. Tuberculosis often referred to as “TB,” has surpassed both HIV and AIDS to be the infectious disease with the highest mortality rate worldwide. Through the years as TB has been passed along it has become harder and harder to find a drug to cure this fatal disease, and some strands of TB have become drug resistant. The TB disease can have intrinsic resistance to drugs or an acquired one. Drugs like Rifampicin, Isoniazid, Ethambutol, Pyrazinamide, and Streptomycin are the first line of drugs used to treat a TB infection, but multi-drug resistant TB has changed the way health care professionals can use this medication. MDR-TB has created a huge impact on the way TB can be treated and has caused significant difficulties in controlling the spread of the disease. Resistance to these 1st line drugs has created a pathway for new drugs and resistance mechanisms to form but of course, there is still an untreatable, total drug-resistant, form of TB that has puzzled microbiologists and health care professionals for years. Source: “Drug-resistant Tuberculosis: A review” by Jessy Lallungawi Khawbung, Durbba Nath, and Supriyo Chakraborty LinkI recently read an article about the rise in syphilis (Treponema pallidum bacteria) in the United States. According to the article, syphilis cases are on the rise, partially due to a lack of funding for health care for patients. Covid-19 took the focus of all government health agencies in 2020 and clinics were unable to see patients for these types of diseases. It disproportionately affects African Americans, Latinxs, and Native Americans and even more so the babies that they have. Babies born with congenital syphilis can be born with physical as well as mental deformities and up to 40% of the children die. This article traces the journey of a CDC worker who is trying to locate a pregnant homeless woman whom she is trying to get treated for syphilis. The woman has no outward signs or symptoms yet and she tries to explain how important it is for her to get treated. She even tries to give her incentives such as gift cards to get treated but is unable to successfully get the woman to come into a treatment center. This woman is like many across the United States who do not have access to healthcare and therefore the babies suffer. The CDC simply does not have enough money in its budget to eradicate the problem The article also says that The South and the West have seen the highest rates in years and that some people may not be seeking treatment for fears of catching Coronavirus. This means that the women have also not received any prenatal care during this time.Covid-19 and a lack of funding have led to a resurgence of syphilis, and that could have a devastating effect on babies yet to be born. Syphilis is resurging in the U.S., a sign of public health’s funding crisis
