Description
The highly influential work of Benedict Anderson has highlighted the creation and global spread of ‘imagined communities’ of nationality. Similarly, the minzu categories established by the Ethnic Classification Project were also “imagined” communities of “ethnic potential,” based on the Chinese party-state’s capacity to interpose and actualize new categories of identity. As Mullaney suggests, ethnic classification by the Chinese party-state was never really about “accuracy;” rather, the focus of such efforts was on creating possibilities and “potentials” in classification. Today, we have come to accept these minzu categories as natural, fixed, and objective. But they began as constructed concepts, framed in a particular time and space, by agents of authority.

For years, public understanding of the Ethnic Classification Project assumed that Chinese authorities conducted their analyses and categorizations of the country’s minzu based on criteria identified by Joseph Stalin. Mullaney’s study reveals that leading ethnologists such as Lin Yaohua based their understanding of the ethnolinguistic tapestry of Yunnan primarily on the work of Henry Rodolph Davies, and that Lin and his colleagues effectively modified or revised the ideas and theories of Stalin as they applied to the particularities of the China context.

This essay has four (4) parts:
