MGMT 3770 Ethics Discussion Assignment
Answer this question
PROBLEM As the Vice President of Operations on a routine visit to the plant in Slovenia that is supplying ingredients for your products, you discover that toxins are contaminating the air in and around the plant. When you ask, you are informed by the CEO of Bresnet, the company that owns the plant, that the processes meet or exceed local environmental regulations for safety but they do violate USA environmental standards. To clean up the process would be pricey, but to allow the pollution to continue could severely damage the health of the plant workers and the company’s reputation.

- The relevant facts: I am the Vice President of Operations, on a visit to my supplier in Slovenia when I discover that the process they are using to make the supplies are harming the local environment, which is not violating any local laws, but would they do violate U.S. environmental standards. To clean up the process would cost a lot of money, but not doing it could harm the workers, contaminate the water supply and damage the companies reputation.
- The Ethical Issues: Do I advise the Suppliers President to clean up the process or not?
- Primary Stakeholders: Me, my company’s employees, our customers, the supplier’s president, the suppliers employee’s, and anyone living near the plant that could be affected by the harmful process.
- Possible Alternatives: I could do nothing, and just let everything continue as it is. I could say that the supplier’s president has to clean up the process or will loose our business. I could develop programs to slowly improve the process to incrementally decrease the damage caused. I could just go to my boss with what I’ve found and make it their problem.
- Ethics of Alternatives: Vary, I would think having the plant clean up their process would be the most ethical option, and do nothing would be the least ethical option.
- Practical Constraints: Money. I might not have enough authority. The people might not listen to me because I am am a foreigner.
- I would tell the supplier that they would need to clean up their process and protect the environment if they wanted to continue our business. I would also tell my boss and hopefully gain their support.

7 Step Reasoning
- Relevant facts: Slovenia plant supplies ingredients for our product.
Toxins are contaminating Slovenia’s plant air.
This process is okay for the laws in Slovenia but violates USA environmental standards.
To clean up the process is costly. To continue the process will damage health.
- Ethical Issues: The toxins violate the USA environmental standards. And the toxins can also make people sick. This could also ruin the reputation of the company.
- Primary Stakeholders: I am as the VP of Operations, the CEO of Bresnet, the employees of Bresnet and the Slovenia’s plant employees. The consumers who buy the products are also stakeholders.
4.Alternatives: Do nothing and continue to let the plant operate with the toxins.
Change the process within the plant to avoid toxins.
Find a new supplier that might be in the US.
- Ethics of Alternatives: If you continue to do nothing, employees and customers’ health will be damaged. This will be bad for the company’s reputation.
Changing the process to avoid toxins will cost a lot. We also don’t know how exposed the toxins are to the air surrounding the plant.
Finding a new supplier in the US means that they already follow the laws. The new supplier prices might cost a lot more. Also the people of the Slovenia might depend on that plant for income in their communities.
- Practical constraints: Government regulations, the US requires certain standards for goods. We have regulations to avoid people getting sick.
- Action: As the VP of Operations, I should talk to the CEO of the Slovenia plant and learn the processes that go into creating the ingredients. After learning the processes I will know where the toxins are coming from. After that we will change the process to create a toxic free environment. This will prevent all the stakeholders from getting sick and avoid job lost in Slovenia. This might cost a lot but it would not nearly cost as much as the business being shut down due to bad PR and lawsuits from sickness.
