Short Worldview Paper Outline (Phil 101)
Part 1: Before taking this class, did you know anything about philosophy? If so, what did you know? Did you know about metaphysics, epistemology, or value theory? If not, what general ideas did you have about philosophy? Did you think about these things the way they were discussed in class? How was the discussion in class similar or different to your prior beliefs about philosophy?
Part 2: In the first freewrite, I asked you to choose a belief and say why you believe it. I’d like you to restate that belief here with your reasons, perhaps more coherently. But I’d also like you to choose one additional belief and follow the same process. So for this assignment, you will describe in detail two major beliefs of your worldview, and your reasons for those beliefs. Dictionaries usually define a worldview as the following: a collection of beliefs about life and the universe held by an individual. For example, if you believe that some sort of God exists or that smoking cigarettes leads to lung cancer, both are parts of your worldview. Below are some questions to help you get started. Remember, you can write about any aspect of your worldview that you want to; the topics below are just possibilities.

Part 3: In class we went over both fallacies and cognitive biases (the PowerPoint is on Blackboard if you want to review it). Briefly discuss the difference between fallacies and cognitive biases. Then make sure that your paper contains none of the fallacies listed. Ask yourself honestly whether your two beliefs above are free from these biases. If so, how have you managed it? If not, what biases are present and what can you do to stop letting them affect you, if anything?
What should the final product look like?: You should turn in a 1-2 page, typed, double-spaced paper addressing the three parts above. You can write more if you want to.
How will you grade my paper?: At this stage, this paper is not graded. It’s designed to help me see where you all are with the material and reasoning in general, and for you to apply deeper reasoning to your own beliefs. So, this assignment is for credit or no credit. You don’t have to be too serious or think too hard at this stage, just write what comes naturally. On the other hand, if you only write three simple sentences for each part, you will not get any credit. Take it seriously, but not too seriously.
Note: If you choose, instead of taking the Final Exam, you can transform this paper into the Final Worldview Paper, which is posted on Blackboard. In other words, you’ll reassess your worldview after going through the class to see what’s changed, if anything, and connect it to some of the major ideas. The Final Worldview Paper will be graded.

Elements of the required response may also be lacking. 40 points out of 50: The essay illustrates solid understanding of the relevant material by correctly addressing most of the relevant content; identifying and explaining most of the key concepts/ideas; using correct terminology; explaining the reasoning behind most of the key points/claims; and/or where necessary or useful, substantiating some points with accurate examples. The answer is complete. 50 points: The essay illustrates exemplary understanding of the relevant material by thoroughly and correctly addressing the relevant content; identifying and explaining all of the key concepts/ideas; using correct terminology explaining the reasoning behind key points/claims and substantiating, as necessary/useful, points with several accurate and illuminating examples. No aspects of the required answer are missing. Use of Sources (worth a maximum of 20% of the total points). Zero points: Student failed to include citations and/or references. Or the student failed to submit a final paper. 5 out 20 points: Sources are seldom cited to support statements and/or format of citations are not recognizable as APA 6th Edition format. There are major errors in the formation of the references and citations. And/or there is a major reliance on highly questionable. The Student fails to provide an adequate synthesis of research collected for the paper. 10 out 20 points: References to scholarly sources are occasionally given; many statements seem unsubstantiated. Frequent errors in APA 6th Edition format, leaving the reader confused about the source of the information. There are significant errors of the formation in the references and citations. And/or there is a significant use of highly questionable sources. 15 out 20 points: Credible Scholarly sources are used effectively support claims and are, for the most part, clear and fairly represented.
