In this assignment, you are expected to reflect on your understanding of how mass communication and mass media intersects with the concepts we have been discussing in class.
FIRST, pick an issue which has been in the news (for example, Black Lives Matter, immigration debates in the U.S. the Syrian refugee crisis, Me Too movement, etc). Make sure the topic relates to the concepts discussed in the textbook. FIRST, introduce the topic. THEN, define the concept/s and relate the topic to the concept. NEXT, analyze the role of mass media (news media, entertainment media, social media) in highlighting the issue. There should ideally be THREE sections on the media news media (newspapers, news websites, television news, etc), entertainment media (film, television series, documentaries) and social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc). So, there should be FIVE sections:
1. Introduce the issue
2. Define concept/s AND relate to the issue
3. News media
4. Entertainment media
5. Social Media
You can include images if it helps to illustrate the point better, especially with regards to certain examples (tweets, etc). However, do keep in mind that the MINIMUM page requirement is FOUR pages of text for each group member. Images cannot be a substitute for text.
You are each required to use 4-5 sources, out of which 1-2 MUST be scholarly. The textbook can also count as a reference. Please do not cite Wikipedia or sample papers/presentations that you might find online. Important:
You do NOT need to include an introduction or conclusion.
You need to use 4-5 sources (for each group member), out of which AT LEAST 1-2 must be scholarly.
In-text citations are a MUST! If there is a source mentioned in the reference list, it should ALSO be mentioned in your text this applies to BOTH direct quotations and paraphrased content.
