Research Question
Does the median income of individuals with a college degree differ significantly from the median income of those who did not finish high school? Secondarily, is there an additive effect that comes with more years of schooling (no high school, high school, associates, bachelor’s, graduate level)?
Rationale
Many jobs require a certain minimum level of education. Individuals are also encouraged to finish high school and go to college because they are told that they are more likely to get a higher paying job and have job security.
This study will explore if the relationship between education and income is valid and will also consider whether the number of years of education has an impact on income.
Population
The population for this study is adults living in the United States.
Variables
The primary variables are educational attainment and median reported income.
Additional variables of interest that may be confounders are sex, age, and rural versus urban location, so these variables will be collected but may not be included in the final analysis.
Sampling
Data will be sourced from the United States Census Bureau.
This survey is administered across all adults in the United States and therefore is a representative sample. In order to make the analysis more streamlined, a random sample of census responders will be selected and their data will be obtained from the Census Bureau.
