Description/Paper Instructions
Marketing Sports Media Patrick Kane Essay
In this assignment, you will look at a solo athlete sport (examples: BMX racing, skateboarding, downhill skiing, gymnastics) and pick an athlete who competes in it.The athlete you choose may be part of a team (such as the Olympic U.S. Alpine skiing team), but must compete individually to qualify for this assignment.Spend a week researching different types of media coverage of this athlete pursuing their individual sport, including:Traditional media. Coverage in digital, broadcast and print outlets of all sizes. Examples: ESPN.com, azcentral.com, The Athletic. In-house media.
The team, sport, league or competition event’s own coverage of the sport. It’s typically found on the team’s website, blog, social media handles and other platforms such as podcasts, YouTube or similar venues. For a solo-athlete sport, this could mean Team USA’s Olympic coverage, Red Bull Cliff Diving’s coverage or similar.Citizen media. Fan coverage such as blogs (SB Nation, Reddit or similar), podcasts and social media.Personal media. The athletes’ own coverage/content on their social media accounts (not the team’s account), personal website and other digital platforms.Select two pieces of media from each of the four types above (eight total pieces)Give each one a label describing its content or purpose (news story about the athlete’s performance in an event, feature story about the athlete’s life/backstory, analytical breakdown of athlete’s strengths and weaknesses or another relevant category).
Give each one a sentiment (positive, negative, neutral) based on the tone of the coverage. Keep in mind: Just because the content of a story is “bad” (for example, the athlete lost the event) does not necessarily mean the sentiment of a specific piece of coverage is “negative.” Examine the differences between independent journalists and citizen journalists who are passionate fans (or detractors) of the athlete, and even the differences between reporters and columnists (whose job is to share their opinion) at traditional media outlets. An easy way to format this is by listing all your pieces of media at the top of your assignment, like this:
Traditional media: link to story Label: Sentiment: Traditional media: link to storyLabel: Sentiment:In-house media: link to storyLabel:Sentiment:In-house media: link to storyLabel: Sentiment:And so on… Submit an 800+-word essay reflecting on what you learned from researching these and other stories about the athlete you chose. Attribute your sources within the body of your text using clear attribution language (e.g. “According to…” or “[Source] says…”), and link to each source. It’s worth noting, we’re expecting an analysis, not a summary (Links to an external site.). We want to know your thoughts, not those of the various authors you researched. At a minimum, your essay should cover the following points:What do the stories you researched about your athlete have in common? What do you notice is different about the coverage of this athlete from platform to platform? What have you learned about sports media coverage from this analysis, and how might it influence how you consume it moving forward?
