Week Five Introduction:
We will continue discussing some of the difficulties with implementing and maintaining lean systems as well as examining inventory reduction.
Any change in an organization will be met with resistance and obstacles. Knowing how to overcome these implementation difficulties as well as knowing how to resist the temptation to revert back to the old way of doing business, is important for successful change implementation.
Week Five Objectives:
- Apply Christian principles in critical thinking.
- Discuss challenges in implementing lean systems and dealing with the concept of change.
- Compare and contrast lean and economic order quantities (EOC) to determine inventory levels.
- Evaluate the positive and negative effects of good and bad turnover and the consequences of each.
- Apply lean concepts to a project.

Learning Activity 5.1: Devotional
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1
Galatians 5:1 is considered the key verse in Paul’s writing to the church in Galatia. The church was under pressure to add elements of Jewish laws to Christian faith. Paul’s letter to the Galatians was an argument against going back to the law from which Christ’s death had set them free. Paul argued that to go back to the law was the equivalent of a freed slave returning to his chains.
When many changes occur—be they in organizations or in our personal lives—there is frequently a time of temptation to revert back to the old way of doing things. Change seldom goes smoothly. During these difficulties it seems easier just to go back and do it the old way, forgetting the many problems associated with the old way.
As we look at lean implementation, one of the difficulties in successful implementation will be the temptation to just forget it and go back to the old ways. Paul’s admonition to avoid being enslaved is a good caution to remember.
Objectives
- Apply Christian principles in critical thinking. (5.1)
Instructions
- Read the devotional and consider the aspect of change.
- In the discussion forum, reflect on these questions:
- How do you identify those areas that need to be changed in your personal life?
- How do you work on continual change in your Christian walk?
- Have there been temptations to return to the old ways of working on something when a new process has been introduced at work?
- Post your thoughts in the discussion forum titled Wk5 Devotional.
- Responding to the posts of other students is not required, but is encouraged.
Learning Activity 5.2: Dealing with Change
Introduction and Purpose of Assignment
Successfully implementing lean systems, like any change an organization wants to make, has many challenges. One challenge is the temptation to revert back to the old way of doing things. Some will forget the problems of the old system and only remember how easy it was to work under the old system.
Objectives
- Discuss challenges in implementing lean systems and dealing with the concept of change. (5.2)
Theory and Context
John Kotter has done extensive research on successful change implementation. Review the links below for details on the Kotter Change Model.

Learning Activity 5.3: Inventory Methods Paper
Introduction and Purpose of Assignment
Companies maintain a close watch on inventory because of its effects on cash flow, customer satisfaction, production flow, and many others. This assignment provides insights to two methods used to maintain efficient and cost effective means by which to positively affect the aforementioned areas of concern.
Objectives
- Compare and contrast lean and economic order quantities (EOQ) to determine inventory levels. (5.3)
Theory and Context
Lean concepts and economic order quantity (EOQ) may, at times, be in conflict with each other. Each concept is trying to control inventory levels, but the priorities in each approach are different. Knowing when to use lean and when to use EOQ will aid the decision making for managers.

- Compare and contrast where the tools are most advantageous in certain situations.
- Determine if the two can be effectively used together to achieve the goals of efficiency, availability, and cost control.
- Meet expectations provided in the Paper Writing rubric.

Learning Activity 5.4: Economic Effects of Inventory Turnover
Introduction and Purpose of Assignment
Inventory Turnover is not the first thing most business owners specifically consider when entering a business. It gets little attention even after the business is six to twelve months old. It is only when someone notices the dust on items that anyone gets excited. The purpose of this assignment is to prompt thought now about the importance of moving inventory.
Objectives
- Evaluate the positive and negative effects of good and bad turnover and the consequences of each.
Theory and Context
Inventory Turnover dramatically influences the fiscal side of any business, even if its focus is service. For this exercise think critically about what good or bad Inventory Turnover might stimulate.

Learning Activity 5.5: Lean Project: Update Milestone
Introduction and Purpose of Assignment
Now that you have brainstormed the project that you will complete for this course, it is time for an update to the facilitator for your own pacing and self-awareness.
Objectives
- Apply lean concepts to a project. (5.5)
Instructions
- Last week you considered a lean project at work or at home to write about. Now it is time to develop a 7-9 page paper due in Week Six.
- The areas covered in the Week Six paper should be:
- Describe the current condition or status. Also in this section describe the problems associated with the current situation.
- Describe the desired lean improvement to be made. Use lean terminology.
- Discuss the desired outcome of this change. What are the benefits? Use supporting expert opinion to validate your expectations of the project.
- Describe how this would be successfully implemented. The best plans fail due to poor implementation. Prior assignments in this course should aid your development of this section of the paper.
- Describe how this lean improvement will be maintained. Without a system in place to monitor and maintain, old habits creep back in. What will be done to prevent this from happening?
- To achieve maximum points for content and analysis of the final project, the following elements should be thoroughly addressed:
- Describe the current condition
- Describe the desired lean improvement to be made
- Discuss the desired outcome from this change. Support this with expert opinion.
- Describe how this would be implemented successfully.
- Describe how this lean improvement will be maintained.
- Meet expectations provided in Final Project rubric located in the syllabus and in the Week Six Student Guide.
- The final paper is not an outline, but requires standard APA paper formatting.
- Provide at least four academic resources.
- During Week Five, you should be making progress on this paper. The Week Five milestone requires the submission of a draft of parts I & II. APA formatting is not required for this draft.
- Submit the paper to your facilitator as an attachment in the drop box titled Lean Project: Update Milestone by the end of the week.
Grading Guide or Rubric:
Milestone grading is based on completeness of addressing parts I & II of the assignment.
