Majlis After Corona
The majlis is a place where people gather around to discuss, to treat and to be part of the talk. The people could be different, for example family members, friends or many strangers who are visitors that are invited. The majlis has different reasons, but culturally it had become an important tradition for all middle eastern culture. Almost all Arab has a majlis and it is designed in a specific way knowing it’s a majlis. In this assignment, I will be talking about how corona effected majlis, and how it changed the perspective of it. Majlis has decreased because of corona virus that infects anyone easily if they aren’t careful enough to protect themselves. The government of UAE and health ministers warned people about getting together, which is majlis is a part off. And big fines are given to the people who doesn’t respect the rules. A lot of people had the fines hosting majlis parties or majlis gatherings which motivated other people to not do majlis gatherings.
The majlis is a place that is decorated to welcome family members, friends of visitors to the place with comfortable seating areas, snacks and foods always available and also giving them traditional Arabic hot drinks such as tea and Arabic coffee, there are sometimes also TV for the guests to watch. The place could be a floor seating or a sofa seating area. The space is always decorated for the guests to feel comfortable and welcomed to the place.
The owner of the majlis could have the majlis as a place to invite people or it’s a routine to have friends or family members over. Or it could be a place to discuss important things with work or family gatherings. The majlis could also be a place of where people generally have fun, every majlis has a theme. There are majlis that is designed for funerals to have people come in and greet the family member, there are majlis that is made for big meetings. Majlis is used in different ways and it is very common in Arab culture.
The ones who hosts the majlis are different because there are normal people like me, I have a majlis where I invite my friends to have fun. Playing PlayStation games and playing card games. My father has his majlis to have family members or friends around, it’s a ritual we both do in different majlis. Almost everyone especially male Arabs have majlis designed for them to have. And there will be always guests and visitors as the actors for the majlis.
This topic is easy for me to talk about because I have a majlis in my house, and it is used a lot. But now coved is infecting people and the government told us to not gather in the majlis. It has made a bad impact and people are limited who can come to majlis. The topic is also part of my tradition in UAE that could be talked about.
