Looking Through Different Lenses Discussion Project
Discussion 1: Looking Through Different Lenses
As a social worker, you bring your own lens—that is, your own set of assumptions, biases, beliefs, and interpretations—into your interactions with clients and the human services professionals with whom you collaborate. Human services organizations have their own cultures that influence their organizational lenses. An organizational lens reflects key assumptions about the individuals to whom the organization provides services. These assumptions influence the organization’s policies and procedures which, in turn, impact service delivery. For example, an organization that focuses on understanding the perspectives of the clients it serves may allow clients to provide feedback about their client experience through membership on advisory boards or boards of directors. The clients may have the power to make recommendations and decisions about the organization’s policies and procedures.
Understanding cultural lenses—your personal lens, as well as those of the organizations and other individuals with whom you work and interact—will enable you to better serve your clients.
Focus on the Paula Cortez case study for this Discussion. In this case study, four professionals present their perspectives on the Paula Cortez case. These workers could view Paula’s case through a variety of cultural lenses, including socioeconomic, gender, ethnicity, and mental health. For this Discussion, you take the role of the social worker on the case and interpret Paula’s case using two of these lenses.
BY DAY 3
Post how you, as a social worker, might interpret the needs of Paula Cortez, the client, through the two cultural lenses you selected. Then, explain how, in general, you would incorporate multiple perspectives of a variety of stakeholders and/or human services professionals as you treat clients.

Support your post with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.
BY DAY 5
Respond to at least two colleagues in the following ways:
Address a colleague’s post that differs from yours with regard to at least one cultural lens and expand upon the colleague’s interpretation of Paula’s needs.
Explain whether you might use your colleague’s strategy for addressing multiple perspectives when treating clients, and explain why.
Colleague 1: Jennifer Paone-HurdPost how you, as a social worker, might interpret the needs of Paula Cortez, the client, through the two cultural lenses you selected. In the case of Paula Cortez there are many needs that I would want to address with the client. I would want to address the medical concerns for Paula.
The medical provider has concerns that the client is unable to physically care for the baby. My job as the social worker is to be able to provide resources for Paula so she can be able to provide the necessary care for her baby. It is not my job to make a judgement about her ability to care for the baby, but it is rather my job to be able to provide resources for her and her baby. I would encourage Paula to keep her medical appointments and to take her medication as prescribed. Ig she had issues with getting to her appointments then I would search out options for transportation services to assist her in her care.
When reviewing the narrative for the psychiatrist, his recommendation was for an abortion. I feel that this was not an appropriate recommendation for her psychiatrist to give. It has been stated that she has little to no support. As her social worker my job would be to seek out support groups for Paula. These groups could be in person or through a virtual platform. As her social worker my responsibility would also be to provide Paula with all other options for her pregnancy, I would provide resources for her to make a decision that would be best for her and her situation.
These options could be abortion, having the baby, or adoption but the decision would be ultimately Paula’s choice and not the choice of the people that are providing services to her. Then, explain how, in general, you would incorporate multiple perspectives of a variety of stakeholders and/or human services professionals as you treat clients.
As Paula’s social worker, I would monitor her compliance of her medical needs, her psychiatric needs, and any other disciplines that are involved in her care. In developing my own treatment plan with Paula, she would have specific activities that she would be asked to do for her to achieve her own identified goals. I would also be a part of Paula’s treatment goal and I would take on the responsibility of monitoring her compliance which would entail me reaching out to her providers and getting updates on her progress and compliance.
I would encourage that monthly meetings be held possibly through Zoom or another platform with all the other providers to discuss progress and any needs or concerns. In the process of collaboration, current services can be modified, and new services can be created for better approaches that can be tailored to be more in tune with the client based on their identified needs. Cultural Lenses
The physician assigned to Paula cultural lens is that of a medical standpoint for the welfare of his patient. Based on his observations Paula does not seem to have the capacity to follow through with taking care of her aliments and this can be seen by her choosing to not continue her medications for her HIV, has Hepatitis C, and multiple foot ulcers. The physician stated that he was frustrated and unsure due to her disability she will be unable to properly are for the child and has discussed, at length, termination for both the sake of her health and the determination that the child would not receive proper care.
As a social worker that thinks of the welfare of others, I can understand the physicians worries, but I also think that it is ableist to assume that someone with a disability is unable to care for their child, prior to checking other avenues of assistance. I understand that from a medical standpoint that this would seem to be the best course of action, but from a social work perspective Paula would benefit from resources that could assist her. It is also important to keep in mind why she prefers alternatives to the medication and why she is unbale to take the medication continuously.
The OB nurse seems to be using a medical and mental health perspective in that she recognizes that there are many factors contributing to why Paula is having difficulties maintaining her medical needs. The nurse determined that on top of Paula’s medical conditions she is also diagnosed with bipolar disorder which could be a reflection as to why Paula is having difficulties. The nurse also connected how certain medications ca be a detriment to Paula’s pregnancy, which could explain why she prefers alternatives. The nurse also believes that with the proper care termination need not be an option. As a social worker I would surmise that the nurse does understand that many factors in a person’s life can play a role in the behavior and should be reflected in their overall care. I agree with the nurse that Paula is under a lot of stress and having bipolar disorder increases this.
The Importance of Multiple Perspectives
Human service professionals need to review all aspects of the clients care in order to make fully rational decisions on their treatment. Using a holistic approach/integrated care allows for the full understanding of the client needs to better determine the best course of action and we can see why this is important due to Paula’s circumstance. This should be done on a medical, social, mental health, educational basis, collateral contacts.
