The AdventureWorks sample databases are based on a fictitious corporation called Adventure Works Cycles, which is a major, worldwide manufacturing company. Metal and composite bicycles are manufactured and sold to commercial customers in North America, Europe, and Asia. While the company’s headquarters are in Bothell, Washington, with 290 workers, it has multiple regional sales teams spread across its market base.
Adventure Works Cycles purchased Importadores Neptuno, a small manufacturing facility in Mexico, in 2000. Several important subcomponents for the Adventure Works Cycles product range are manufactured by Importadores Neptuno. These subcomponents are delivered to a facility in Bothell for final assembly. Importadores Neptuno took over as the only manufacturer and distributor of touring bicycles in 2001.
Following a profitable fiscal year, Adventure Works Cycles is trying to expand its market share by targeting sales to its most loyal consumers, expanding product availability through an external website, and lowering sales expenses through lower production costs.
