Proposal Argument
Write a proposal argument that calls for action on how to solve some aspect of an international, national, local, community or workplace problem. This proposal cannot relate to the classical argument paper already submitted. Write directly to a specific audience. This will help target a certain approach to the problem and make the overall argument more convincing as well as focused.
Overview of Assignment
Identify a problem connected with your controversy, and then write a persuasive proposal detailing how to improve the problem. Give full, precise details about what exactly you want done and how we can do it. You are not required to come up with a guaranteed solution. That is, you probably can’t come up with a proposal that will definitively solve the problem forever, so don’t try. However your proposal must offer a way to make a significant improvement.
Address the following in the paper:
- What is the problem? Why is it a problem?
- How bad is the problem? Do we really need to do anything about it?
- What has caused the problem? Why have we not done anything about it before? Or, if we have done something about it, why didn’t it work?
- What’s your proposal for an improvement? Give details. This is the single most important part of your paper; the most common problem I’ve observed with student proposals is vagueness. Spell everything out.
- Is your proposal workable? Can it actually be done?
- Will your proposal help? What effect will it have on the situation?
- Are there any competing ideas about how to address the problem? Why should we prefer your proposal over the others?
You must support your argument with research. Five credible sources are required. These sources could be traditional print or online database ones as well as interviews, surveys, polls and personal experience. Personal experience can count for 1 source only. Wikipedia and websites similar to it are never allowed. Find information related to objections to your proposal too, for you’ll need this in the justification section. If you find that you are relying on a small number of sources, then you probably need to do more research. Failure to document your sources constitutes plagiarism and will be dealt with as laid out in the syllabus.
The paper should be 5 to 7 pages in length. Papers should be double-spaced, Times New Roman font, 10 or 12 pt. type with default margins (1 inch margins at top and bottom, 1.25 inches at left and right).
Design, Paper and Presentation Components and Rubric: (200 pts)
Divide your paper into these sections, and include the following subheadings:
- Examination of the Problem (Explain the problem and the relevance of it to a particular audience) /40
- Proposal (Lay out your call to action in a specific thesis statement. Then explain the specifics of your plan, taking into consideration the practical implementation of it.) /50
- Justification (Provide reasoning and evidence that your proposal will be effective. Also describe clear objections to your proposal based upon evidence, but refute them with evidence to suggest the opponents are short-sighted or just plain wrong. In this section also explain why your proposal will be a better solution than alternative plans proposed.) /50
- Conclusion (Summarize what you have proposed, why it will work, the impact of following it or a prediction on what will happen if not implemented.) /10
Other requirements:
- Visual Component: Include a visual advertisement of your proposal using graphics and text accentuating the problem and the proposal. Use documentation to support some of it that is different from what you used in the regular paper. Make it visually persuasive in terms of design and text emphasis. Attach this to the end of your paper. /30
- Correct format of MLA internal documentation and the Works Cited page /20 *** A works cited page listing five sources must be attached to your paper. The paper will not be accepted without this; therefore, an F will be given in this case. As always, overall documentation and credibility of the sources used will be evaluated in each section of the paper. ***
