First, please watch the PBS film Two American Families at:
After watching the film, please write a reflection essay based on the following information.
The American Dream could be summarized as follows:If you work hard and play by the rules, you will be able to go as far as your God-given ability will take you. What does this film tell us about the American Dream in contemporary American society?
Based on the film and your personal experience, what societal factor(s) may influence one’s chance of realizing the American Dream? And in what ways do the two families in the film resemble and differ from yours in terms of socioeconomic resources and what can be achieved? Be sure to use relevant sociological perspectives and concepts we have learned in class, such as social class, socioeconomic status, social mobility, poverty, income and wealth, socialization, and culture when writing this essay. Also feel free to include your own questions and interpretations in your essay.
