Level of Developmental Performance Assignment
Please read thoroughly- I hope this helps
Case Study Project
The following is merely a template for organizing your case study. You are not required to use this format. Students are encouraged to present the required information in a manner that reflects their understanding and personal organization (of the recommendations generated)
Child’s Name: __________________________________ D.O.B. __________________ CA: _________ (chronological age)
Referral Background and Family History: This should be written in a narrative form and can be combined with the developmental/medical information. This section is usually a few paragraphs and should be paraphrased (no direct quotes from the evaluation report if possible). The purpose of this section is for you to call attention to bio-ecological information that is relevant to Cameron’s development, cultural considerations, family, supports, and environment.
Medical Information: Identify any key information in Cameron’s medical history that is relevant to his development. This can be combined with the information in above section or provided separately.
Present Level of Developmental Performance (include strengths and areas of need- specific to assessments conducted for each domain of development) When synthesizing information be certain to separately address each domain of development and to use terminology appropriate to early childhood special education and include concrete data (e.g.: age equivalents, specific needs, etc…): This should be written in narrative form (complete sentences in a logical order). In this section, I will be assessing if you synthesize and identify relevant information and can connect it to where Cameron is developmentally. Use present level verbiage. For example, instead of stating, “Cameron can not…” say, “Cameron is presently functioning …. Or Cameron has a preference for…” Please vary how you synthesize and present the data for each domain.
Recommended Interventions (approaches, models, or global strategies): You will need to generate five meaningful and applicable recommendations that directly connect to facilitating specific areas of development which need attention. The expectation is for a minimum of 5 recommended interventions. It should be noted that an intervention may address more than one developmental need. However, you need to be explicitly clear in justifying how your recommended intervention will address fostering development for specific skills in specific domains. I will be assessing to ensure the interventions you identify logically align with the needs you specify and the data from the developmental report. It should be noted, Cameron has many needs. You are only required to focus on at least 5 recommendations which you perceive as most critical in addressing his needs, while being mindful of his strengths.
Specific Recommended Activities and Actions (strategies): The expectation is to comprehensively describe recommendations and activities to facilitate development in appropriate learning environments emphasizing how the child will learn to generalize skills. This should be written with sufficient enough detail that someone (teacher, parent, etc..) could implement directly based on what you describe. For example, if one of your intervention recommendations focuses on using PECS (Picture Exchange Communication Symbols) that align with a specific need (transition skills), in this section you will describe with significant detail exactly what that might look like implemented. You will specify how the recommended intervention will be implemented through a detailed description of the activities and actions needed.
For what purpose should the PECS be used (which needs does it address-may be more than one?; how would it be introduced?, how would Cameron be taught to use the intervention?; where would the PECS be used (which environments), what would the teacher do to implement? Is there guidance for the family?
Other Information or Resources to be shared with the Parents: This would be any supplemental information and/or resources that would be useful in understanding the recommended interventions or implementing the specific activities
Please do not merely list websites or resources as full credit will not be awarded. Rather indicate for what purpose the resource may be useful and why. There is not a specific recommendation for an amount of resources (though no resources would not meet the requirement of having them).
You may choose to organize the information and present the requirements in a manner that makes sense to you.
For example, following the background information: you might organize the requirements as:
Present Level (communication development)
Recommended Intervention (description)
Specific activity (strategies, actions, activities) for how the recommended intervention may be implemented.
Present Level (emotional and social development)
Recommended intervention (description_
Specific activity (strategies) for how the recommended intervention may be implemented.
And continue with a sequence such as this
OR
You may find it more logical to:
Summarize all of the present levels of performance/development for each domain
Indicate an overview of each of your five Recommended Interventions being certain to align them with Cameron’s needs.
Finally, describe with specific detail the activities or actions that could be implemented for each of the broad interventions.
OR ….
I am completely flexible in how you organize and present the requirement so this case study so long as you address each of the requirements.
Please note-
You are required to address language development (communication) development-see the rubric
You do not have to provide a recommendation for each domain (though you must describe the present level of performance for each domain).
You could choose to provide more than one recommended intervention for a single domain (e.g.: maybe you choose to primarily focus on communication development and provide three recommended interventions; then two interventions for social and emotional development). Part of the purpose is for me to gain insights on what areas of development you think are most relevant and which approaches you think could meet those needs.
I cannot stress enough- that when I am assessing your Developmental Case Study- I will do so consistent with the learning expectations (objectives) for this course and mindful of where you are in your learning. I do not expect the same outcomes/recommendations as I would from a seasoned teacher.
If you feel overwhelmed- take a deep breath and focus on one thing at a time.
If you have any questions that need clarifying- email me. Please note, we will thoroughly discuss in class on several occasions before your submission.
All I ask is that you bring a well-developed draft to class on the designated day prior to final submission (see tentative learning plan for when draft must be complete: usually the week prior to when it is due). Well-developed draft means that I expect the background information to be synthesized and written. I expect that you will have synthesized and written summaries for each of the present levels of development (all five domains) and you should have at least one recommended intervention (described) along with the specific details of the strategies/activities/actions that you would utilize to implement the recommendation.
I will provide examples in class at a time appropriate, once you have a complete draft, and we will talk through the rubric and expectations for each section.
