Legal and Ethical Environment of Business Discussion
The issue of right and wrong has always been open to debate and scrutiny. In people’s private lives, it is open to interpretation and is quite subjective. However, in the business world, there is not that individual definition of right and wrong, at least there should not be.
Reflect back on your professional life and recall any time you can identify when, in your own opinion, your organization may have done something unethical. Please do not state or specify the name of the business, just the incident. Then, support your opinion with some research to substantiate your assertions.
1- Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates.
Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas: Search the library and the Internet for information pertaining to the ethical violation made by your organization, past or present, and be sure not to identify the organization. See if this incident has occurred in other organizations; give 2 examples and their outcomes.
Can you think of any legitimate justification for the organization’s actions with 2 examples? Explain and justify your explanation. Take a position and argue or defend your position.

Hello Everyone,
There are countless occurrences of businesses being unethical. An unethical choice that I have seen in the past is where businesses “fudge” the numbers to make business appear better than it actually is. As an investor, this type of unethical behavior is incredibly offensive and can affect my personal financial situation.
Businesses do this to help their stock prices or to appear that they are doing much better than they actually are. When the false reporting comes to light, the stock price for that business crashes and can truly diminish long-term earnings in an instant. It can take a long time to recover from instances like that. Unfortunately, this is one of the most common unethical practices among businesses and many individuals are affected by the results.
In 2018, Wells Fargo was discovered manipulating their numbers to make it appear like business was doing much better than it actually was. They reported 3.5 million false accounts in order to show investors an inaccurate business status. This caused a significant drop in the stock price of the company when it came to light.
Fortunately, the Department of Justice stepped in and began their investigation. It was discovered that the purpose of the altered numbers was caused by altered numbers by an internal sector to meet the mandated deadlines of the company. Wells Fargo was ordered to pay a substantial amount of money from this investigation.
There have been many instances in the past from this company in regard to unethical actions. One of which was the same actions two years prior (Jaeger, 2018). In my opinion, this company is unethical to the roots.
Similarly, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk had used social media to influence investors. Social media reaches many more individuals than news reports and Mr. Musk used this platform to deliver “false and misleading” information to the public (Jaeger, 2018). After posting some information on social media, the SEC opened an investigation on those postings.
Tesla was unable to provide supporting evidence of the posts that Mr. Musk had produced on the social media site. The SEC determined that the production numbers produced were inaccurate. Tesla was ordered to pay a twenty million dollar fine for the unethical actions of their CEO.
As an investor, nothing makes me angrier than false reporting. This action is causes investors to make improper decisions and can cause them to lose money. This is why it is completely unethical and a big reason I chose this behavior for this post.
Best,
Chad

There has been many times where you have to use your own better judgement when it comes to taking on tasks on the job. You may witness situations that seem unethical and if you are presented with the decision to continue the unethical practices, or refuse and remain ethical, it may be a hard decision.
Some people may feel like there isn’t a wrong or right way of doing things, but if your intuition is telling you that the way that an organization is handling business is unethical, I am pretty sure that you have a strong reason to feel that was and it may also be justifiable.
When I was doing security at an electronics refurbish warehouse, we were to make sure that regular employees did not enter with their cell phones unless they were on the approved list and this consisted of manager or supervisors. When entering or exiting the facility, security had to check the IMEI on the phone with the database in the system and if it scanned stating it was a match we proceeded to allow the employee through.
When it comes to security, we are to follow ethical practice and to secure and make sure nobody is stealing from the company. I worked with a security guard that when doing their patrols through the warehouse, she was sneaking items from off the floor and stealing them for herself. I found out that the items she had been taken, was given to her by another employee that worked in the warehouse.
The refurbish warehouse did electronic repairs as well as re-selling merchandise that they have repaired. The issue with the organization I had was when I informed my supervisor that the security guard he had sent to work with me was attempting to steal phones from the warehouse they told me that, “your job is to make sure their employees are not stealing”. I was then under the impression that my supervisor was aware of the behavior and ignored it for the simple fact that it was a relative of his.
Stealing is wrong on any level and doing security you are supposed to prevent that. I started to look for a job elsewhere but still informed the client of what I witnessed. In the end the client terminated the security contract with that company and then I didn’t suffer a loss of employment because before that took place I had already began working for another company that valued their code of ethics.
I have researched “security guard retail theft” and many other types of stories popped up that involved security guards stealing from establishments that they are supposed to be securing the merchandise and not causing a lost to the company. In East Garden City, New York two security guards faced felony charges for stealing from a Bloomingdale’s in which they were doing security.
The article stated that both security guards were expected to be responsible for over $260,000 worth of losses. CCTV cameras were viewed and showed the security officers stealing merchandise. There was another incident that happened when unethical practices of a security officer took place. A security guard in South Gate, CA witnessed a customer drop her phone in the parking and instead of returning the phone to her, he stole the phone and place it in his pocket. When she attempted to retrieve her belongings, the security guard denied having the phone. In all three situations from the company I was working for as well as the two examples given, they had an outcome of either court and/or jail time faced. Stealing is not worth it when you can work hard and purchase the items you want for yourself.
When it comes to unethical practices especially when it takes place within the security organizations, it can make it hard for a security company to be trusted and can ruin their reputation.
