Koran by Heart Description Project Report
Koran, Heart, Description, Project, Report
Site Visit Video Response:
This 3- to 4-paragraph paper, video, email, etc. is in response to the documentary film Koran By Heart, online here: You may type this up and submit it in the ordinary manner; type it into an email to me; upload a video of yourself to Canvas or YouTube and link it to me; or write it out longhand and take a picture of the pages and upload them.
The object of this exercise is to give you an opportunity to engage in the kind of work anthropologists do. A site is a place in which meaningful action takes place. The site we will visit is the documentary film Koran By Heart. Please watch it online, on YouTube.
Take notes on what you see and hear, and use those notes to write about 2-3 pages of description. Pay particularly close attention to the following, during any of the mosque scenes you wish to choose: Setting: What is the physical setting of the situation you are observing? Perhaps sketch a map? Describe how the space is organized and used by people.
Scene: How do people you are observing define the space? What do they seem to believe its purposes are, and what meanings do you think they associate with it? Participants: How many people are present? What are their characteristics (patterns of age, gender, other noticeable features)? What kinds of people exist in the situation you are describing? That is, what roles do people occupy as participants in the situation?
Ends: Why do people come to this place? What are their goals and objectives? Do they seem to meet them? Why or why not? Actions: What kinds of actions take place in this situation? How many of these actually occur as you observe? In what order? Mood: What is the tone and manner in which actions take place? How do people seem to be feeling, as far as you can tell? Do their emotions change? What kinds of actions trigger shifts in the tenor of the situation?
Objects: What kinds of objects are present? What significance do they appear to have? Who gives what to whom and, if you can tell, why? Interaction: How do the various kinds of participants interact with one another? Who says what to whom, in what ways, and to what effect? Your paper should have two to three paragraphs on these bulleted points above. The last point, the Self-Reflection, should add an additional paragraph.
Self-Reflection (during as well as afterwards): How do you feel about the site and the people in it? How might these feelings affect your observations? What were your experiences with Muslims prior to this semester? Had you visited a mosque before? Go into as much detail as you feel necessary or comfortable to go into concerning your life. Don’t feel the need to tell personal, psychological, or emotional stories. Instead, focus on relevant attitudes or experiences.
Please feel free to be honest—nobody is going to be reading these except myself—but at the same time do not share anything of a deeply personal nature if doing so would be embarrassing or painful. Try to focus on relevance—why would you think of this attitude or experience? How might it affect your interests and your judgment?
