Journal Article Summary and Evaluation
Objectives
Purpose
All semester, you have been reading about research results second-hand, i.e., they have been described by your instructor or your textbook author. The written assignment for our class this semester gives you some exposure to original research articles first hand! The assignment requires that you visit the Saddleback College Library website and find research articles that is related to psychology using the search engine called APA PsycArticles. Directions on how to access this search engine can be found in the Written Assignments page.
If you remember from the beginning of the semester, the first two steps of the scientific method include thinking of a research question and doing a literature review. This assignment asks you to begin the first two steps (but this will not be a full literature review in which you find EVERY article ever written about a topic). Start with a broad research question about any topic within psychology, such as “marijuana use in college students” or “procrastination at work and in school” or “development of false memories.” You will then find two empirical research articles using the APA PsycArticles database and write a summary and critique of the articles. In the critique, you will apply your knowledge of limitations of various research methods that we have covered throughout the semester, starting in Module 1. Your paper will end with the development of a research hypothesis and research design based on what you learned from the articles.
How will you know how to use the APA PsycArticles database?
See links in the Written Assignment folder for a video lecture on empirical research articles as well as additional videos to help you search the APA PsycArticles Database. We will only briefly cover this in class – it will be part of your “homework” to watch the videos to complete the assignment. Please remember that the database is now called APA PsycArticles, which means you’ll search for the database under the “A” section of the library database list.
How will you know if it is a true empirical research article?
First, it will come from a journal and not a magazine (you can access these journals from APA PsycArticles). Second, it will contain sections specific sections such as an Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and References sections. See my video on empirical research articles to find out more.
Getting Started
This is a LARGE assignment, but breaking it up to smaller parts will help! See the suggested smaller steps on the Written Assignment Overview. Email your instructor to ask for help
Writing Your Paper
The written assignment for this class and should be about 6-7 pages in length. Be sure to include the following 6 components in your paper.
Format of your paper: Your paper should be double spaced, using 12-point Ariel or Times New Roman font, and have 1-inch margins all around. The only part of your paper that needs APA format is the citations page (the last page of your paper). The rest of your paper (the summaries, evaluation, and hypothesis development) does not need to be in APA format. These sections need to be in regular essay/paragraph format: indent your paragraphs, use proper grammar, check your spelling, etc. You can choose to label each of the components with a header: “Article 1,” “Article 2,” “Evaluation”, etc., as long as you still use paragraphs within those sections.
Parts of your paper
Be sure to include the following 6 components in your paper.
Additional Details
For the due date, see the course syllabus.
Please refer to the academic dishonesty policy in the syllabus: note that the entire paper must be written in your own words, including the summary. Do not take sentences or parts of sentences from the articles you read. Do not use a online sentence generator. Changing just two or three words per sentence is not acceptable. Pretend you were telling your best friend about an article that you read. How would you describe it in your own words? Also, you may not turn in any part of an assignment that you have turned in for any other class without permission from me and the other instructor.
Grading Rubric
65 points total
10 points: Article 1 summary of introduction, methods, results, and discussion

Grading rubric for Written Assignment | |||
Dimension | Sophisticated | Competent | Needs work |
Summary of each article graded individually | Each section of the article is summarized (introduction, method, results, and discussion). Summaries are clear, accurate and include enough information for a reader to understand the main research question, what happened in the study, what the results were, and the implication of the results. 8-10 pts | Each section of the article is summarized (introduction, method, results, and discussion). Summaries are accurate but sometimes unclear. May have used too many technical terms from the article instead of being written in your own words. 5-7 pts | Articles may not have met the requirements of the assignment, so was not able to summarize the method and results section (because the article didn’t have those sections. Summary may have been unclear or inaccurate, and lacked critical information to explain what happened in the study. 0-4 pts |
Evaluation | Effectively evaluates the positives and negatives of the research methods of all 2 articles, showing knowledge of limitations of various research methods and/or class content. Provides ideas for further research, and explains possible results and implications of this further research. Explanations or ideas go beyond what is mentioned in the articles themselves. 8-10 pts | Lists possible positives and negatives of the research methods of all 2 articles, showing limited knowledge of limitations of various research methods and/or class content. Provides ideas for further research, but does not explain possible results and implications of this further research. Explanations or ideas are similar to ones mentioned in the articles themselves. 5-7 pts | Paper considers some positives and negatives of the research methods in the 2 articles, but some obvious ones are missed. May have listed an idea for further research but does not make predictions of possible results. 0-4 pts |
Hypothesis Development | Clearly states a research question and a testable hypothesis. Explains how the research design and research results from the 2 summary articles are used to develop this hypothesis. Details of how the hypothesis could be studied by including population, manipulations (if used), predictions, and limitations show an understanding of research design and analysis (from Chapter 1 and mentioned throughout the book). 12-15 pts | Clearly states a research question and a testable hypothesis. Link between 2 summary articles and the hypothesis are underdeveloped. Description of how the hypothesis could be studied includes some details but does not demonstrate understanding of class material. 6-11 pts | Clearly states a research question but hypothesis may not be testable. Unclear how the hypothesis was developed based on information from the 2 summary articles. Vague description of how the hypothesis could be studied. 0-5 pts |
Citation | Citation is in APA format, including but not limited to: no quotation marks in the citation, hanging indent, and the 2 sources are in alphabetical order of the first author’s last name. 8-10 pts | Citation is in the wrong format (usually MLA format) but all the content required is there. 5-7pts | Citation missing content or no citations at all. 0-4 pts |
Format and grammar | Paper is coherently organized and the logic is easy to follow. There are no spelling or grammatical errors and terminology is clearly defined. Writing is clear and concise and persuasive. 8-10 pts | Paper is generally well organized and most of the argument is easy to follow. There are only a few minor spelling or grammatical errors, or terms are not clearly defined. Writing is mostly clear but may lack conciseness. 5-7 pts | Paper is poorly organized and difficult to read – does not flow logically from one part to another. There are several spelling and/or grammatical errors; technical terms may not be defined or are poorly defined. Writing lacks clarity and conciseness. 0-4 pts |
