I portrayed Jan Klein, a nurse, in the research simulation exercise. Throughout the simulation, Jan Klein portrayed an overworked and stressed-out nurse. The nurse attempted to handle as much as possible under all circumstances, but she was unable to accomplish much on her own due to a staffing deficit.
I admired how my character approached her manager when she became overwhelmed and realized she couldn’t continue working alone; it demonstrated that she acknowledged her limitations and understood that continuing to work alone would be hazardous to her health.
However, I feel the nurse should have communicated her stress and overburden to her supervisor sooner. If the nurse had communicated her stress earlier, she might have managed it better and minimized patient dissatisfaction.
Additionally, before approaching a higher-up, I would speak with Dr Sowers about my concerns and stress to see if he might assist. I’m guessing he feels the nurse and him are being dishonest since she went over the PI’s head. Nurse Jan Klein had a colleague, but the two of them struggled to communicate and collaborate well.
Teamwork is critical in inpatient care in order to provide patients with the resources and services they demand. Working under pressure may result in a cascade of blunders; in this situation, Nurse Klein should have requested assistance from a coworker and expressed her anxiety.
Honesty, trust, responsibility, and leadership are all critical in the profession of healthcare. Nurses must adhere to high ethical standards in order to offer their patients the best care possible. The video demonstrated to me that giving therapeutic care to patients required teamwork and candor among staff.

In the research simulation activity, I chose to play Jan Klein, RN. This simulation experience was great in a sense that it gave me a perspective on the role and walks me through situations that are definitely possible to happen and need to be handled correctly. My character did correctly report every concern she had to her PI and the supervisor.
One thing that was not done correctly was to approach the PI before the supervisor, but at the same time it was not since the outcome was unexpected. Also, work overload can definitely damage the health of one’s being. The character could’ve taken appropriate breaks in order to avoid mistakes at work. If the situation would occur again, I would reach out directly to the supervisor with my concerns instead of the doctor since when the concerns were communicated to him the outcome did not change in weeks.
I would use the guidance and support from my peers by expressing how the work overload is affecting me and my work performance. I learned that communication is key in ethical principles, and everything should be communicated accordingly in order to avoid mistakes in the long run. (The Office of Research Integrity ORI, nod)
