Database Design Scenario
- Identify and list the entities, attributes, relationships, and cardinality of the relationships for the following scenario and draw an ERD to represent a conceptual database design. (25 Points)
Home Gardening Database:
A database is needed to keep track of gardening activities on a large property. The property consists of a large number of garden beds. The gardener would like to keep track of the location of the bed on the property, the amount of sunlight that the bed receives (full sun, partial sun, or shade), the type of bed (raised, in-ground, or container), and the primary plant type (annual flower, perennial flower, vegetable, or herb). The gardener would also like to keep data about each plant in each bed. This includes the common name, scientific name, plant type, date planted, and date removed. The database should also store measurements taken for both beds and plants at different times during the growing season. For example, the gardener periodically takes measurements of soil moisture, soil temperature, and soil pH for each bed. Measurements for plants include height, width, blooms, and any presence of fungus, disease, or pests. Finally, the database should also include treatments that are given to beds and plants including watering, fertilization, pesticide application, weeding, and pruning.
SQL
The following diagram represents a database for a car repair shop. In this diagram, PK stands for primary key, FK stands for foreign key. Questions 2 and 3 will be based on this diagram
- Write a script to create the database represented in the diagram. The script should run in such a way that it can recreate the database if it already exists and must include all primary key and foreign key constraints. The script does not need to be implemented in a DBMS. (20 Points)
- Write SQL queries to retrieve the following information from the car repair database (queries do not need to be implemented in a DBMS):
- List the first name and last name of all customers who own a silver Toyota (make) Prius (model) sorted by last name. (5 points)
- List the first name and last name of all mechanics who have worked on John Smith’s Blue Subaru (make) Outback (model). (5 points).
- Find the parts used to replace the transmission on Joan Field’s red Volkswagen (make) Beetle (model). The repair description is “replace transmission”. (5 points)
- Find the customer (first name and last name) and car (make and model) with the most expensive repair in the database. (5 points)
- List the first name and last name of the mechanic who has spent the most time working on Chevrolet (make) Silverado (model) trucks. (5 points)
- Write a query that calculates the average total repair cost, including parts and labor, for Honda Civic owners. (5 points)
- Write a query to add four hours to the time spent by the mechanic Donald Jones on the repair with a repairID of 33452. (5 points)
EXTRA CREDIT (5 points)
Write a query to add a new repair for Kate Zimmer’s 1970 red Ford (make) Mustang (model). The repairID should be the last repairID incremented by 1. The repair has the current date, the description is “replace transmission”, the parts cost is $1565.95, and the labor cost is $1200.00. The required part is 1 (quantity) 1970 (year) Ford (make) Mustang (model) transmission (name). Donald Jones and William Montgomery are the mechanics who will be working on the install and the estimate is that they will spend 4 hours each on the install. (Hint, you will need the query to retrieve the partID and mechanicID based on the above information).
Database Normalization
- The following relation is a spreadsheet that is used by a gym to keep track of clients, trainers, and workouts. The gym has multiple locations and multiple trainers at each location. Some trainers work at multiple gym locations. Clients can work out at any gym location and they work with multiple trainers based on their availability. This spreadsheet is used to maintain a record of a client workouts so that trainers can see what workouts a client has completed across multiple gyms and trainers. The diagram below shows a relation for this problem. (20 points)
Client_ID Client Name
Client Address
Trainer_ID Trainer Name Gym Name Gym Address Workout
- List the dependencies in the above relation and identify them as full, partial, or transitive.
- Create a new set of relations in third normal form.
