Interview Project – 2500 Words (Project Written Component)
Deadline: 11th January 2021
Assessment Weighting: 50%
Assessment Aims:
This assessment aims to allow students the opportunity to demonstrate a critical understanding of online interviewing as a means of qualitative data collection, to demonstrate an understanding of the key methodological issues and debates surrounding interviewing as a method, to evidence direct independent practical experience of interviewing via the collection of interview data (and reflection on that process), and to demonstrate an understanding of the principles of the analysis of interview data.
Assessment Criteria:
The criteria for assessment will be i) Level of Understanding, ii) Quality of Analysis/Argument, iii) Use of Literature and Sources, iv) Relevance to Objectives, v) Structure and Organisation, vi) Insight, Creativity and Originality, vii) Presentation/ Expression, and viii) Referencing.
This is a project exercise in the collection and analysis of interview data. The emphasis is on the ability to make appropriate connections between data derived from interviews and social science concepts (often largely following more deductive than inductive reasoning). Attention should be paid to the strength of the data you select in support of your analysis, and particular attention to the procedure by which you warrant inferences on the basis of the data. This will entail evaluation of the quality of the interview data as well as the construction of a preliminary analysis. The analysis need not be comprehensive; you may wish to select one or two analytic themes to support by reference to the interview data.
While the interviews must be undertaken remotely using an appropriate online platform such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams, it is up to students to decide the degree of structure in the interviews according to what is appropriate for the research question, and the analytic themes addressed.
Approaches ranging from semi-structured interviews, through to unstructured intensive interviews and group interviews, may be used. For the purpose of this exercise, you should do 2 or 3 individual interviews or 1 group interview.
In designing and carrying out your project you should:
- Ensure that the interview topic is appropriate to be undertaken online. Prepare a research question and research design prior to interview fieldwork. Decide what research topic/issue you wish to address and how it is appropriate to research using interview methods. Keep notes of the rationale for the research design. Consider in the research design methodological issues such as the role of the interviewer and interviewer bias (and ensuing issues in reliability and validity) and the impact of conducting the interviews remotely rather than face to face.
- Carry out and record between 2 and 3 online interviews using an appropriate platform such as Zoom or Microsoft teams. Design an interview schedule and carry out interview data collection. Students should carry out the number of interviews appropriate to the limited purposes of this exercise, so do not be too ambitious in the choice of research issue. As above, you should aim to carry out 2-3 individual interviews or 1 group interview. Transcribe the interviews, and keep a record of additional notes taken throughout the interview process.
Important: please note
Research in the field can involve risk and safety issues for researchers and participants. While the use of online platforms mitigates the risk of physical harm it is still important to ensure you protect yourself and interviewees against any kind of emotional risk. It is important to make sure that your research question and interviews will not raise ethical problems. If you are not sure or considering carrying out your interview project with participants who you feel may pose such issues, please consult me.
- Conduct a preliminary analysis of the interview data on the basis of concepts embedded in the research question and design, as well as concepts to inductively emerge from the interview process. Keep records of the progressive development of coding schemes, and the outlines of theoretical notes towards preliminary analysis. Concentrate on more fully writing up one or two thematic areas from the conceptual analysis undertaken.
The written report of the interview conduct and analysis should not exceed 2500 words, and should include quotations from interview transcripts in support of the analysis. There is no need to present entire transcripts as appendices, although they can be attached if you wish. Some students may wish to regard these interviews as a pilot for the methodology of their M.Sc. dissertation.
The Interview Project report should therefore include:
- a) Written Component:
(i) The Research Question and/or Research Aims (this could be indicated in the title and introduction to the project)
(ii) A brief outline and rationale for the research design for online interview research as an appropriate method to address the question
(iii) A brief account of the research procedure, including epistemological, methodological and practical/ technical considerations. Locate your work in a discussion of any pertinent research, methodology, or policy literature – the main point of briefly mentioning your awareness of literature (if any) would be to highlight the conceptual framing of your research question and your discussion of data collected.
(iv) A consideration of the relation of the researcher to the participant throughout, including questions concerning the research relationship and issues in the context of the interactional relation formed in the conduct of the interview (with respect to ethics, interpersonal relations, or any other relational variables).
(v) An account of the nature of the data gained and details as to how you have approached its management and interpretation.
(vi) A preliminary analysis should be included, concentrating on one or two conceptual themes to have emerged from a number amongst the initial coding of data. Include extracts from the data such as passages of dialogue where appropriate to your discussion of the data, and an evaluation of the relevance of the data to the analytic framework. Importantly, you should assess the procedure by which you would defend the linkage between interview data and the analytic framework you have used.
- b) Project Appendices Component:
(i) You might include any relevant note-taking from the interview process, particularly those notes that are relevant to the analytic themes you explore in the written component – this might involve both notes taken as to factors in the interview extraneous to the transcribed verbal data, as well as ongoing theoretical/ analytic reflections as you formulate the coding schema over time and conduct the preliminary analysis.
(ii) Full transcripts are NOT required to be appended, but you may wish to append those sections of an interview that you have used as evidence in your analytic argument, and which may provide context for the data selections used, and how they arose through interview context and interaction.
4 General Advice:
(i) Transcription and analysis: selective transcription is fine for this exercise (although students using this as a dissertation pilot might consider doing full transcriptions in any case). Listen 2 or 3 times (or more) to get familiar with the data. Read and read the transcript. Engage in processes of manual first, second and third coding. Themes for analysis will emerge as you work with your data in this way.
(ii) Importance of inference: the assessment looks particularly at the way that you defend your interpretations. It is important to make your analytic work transparent, discussing how you derived the interpretation you made and how you decided that the particular data extracts you transcribed support that analytic point.
