International trade and tariffs
International trade refers to the exchange of goods and services between countries. Tariffs are taxes imposed on imported or exported goods.
In the early days of international trade, countries generally had few tariffs or trade barriers in place. However, as countries began to industrialize, they began to see trade as a way to protect their own industries and economies. High tariffs were a major cause of the Great Depression in the 1930s, as countries raised tariffs in an attempt to protect their own economies. This led to a decrease in international trade and a worsening of the economic downturn.
In the post-World War II era, there have been several efforts to reduce tariffs and other trade barriers. The most significant of these was the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which was established in 1947. GATT was succeeded by the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995. The main goal of these organizations is to promote free trade and reduce tariffs and other trade barriers.
Despite these efforts, tariffs and other trade barriers continue to be a major issue in international trade. Developed countries often use tariffs and other trade barriers to protect their own industries, while developing countries use them to generate revenue.
There are different types of tariffs, such as ad valorem tariffs, which are based on the value of the goods, and specific tariffs, which are based on a set amount per unit of goods. Tariffs can also be classified as either most-favored-nation (MFN) tariffs or non-MFN tariffs. MFN tariffs are applied equally to all trading partners, while non-MFN tariffs are applied differently to different trading partners.
In addition to tariffs, there are also non-tariff barriers to trade, such as quotas, which limit the amount of a good that can be imported, and subsidies, which give domestic producers an advantage over foreign producers.
